Ingredients For Our Glazed Ham Recipe
- Large bone-in smoked ham Hams you find in the grocery store are pre-cooked. This means you dont have to worry about undercooking. You are just trying to rewarm the ham all the way to the center, while creating a crispy exterior.
- Brown sugar Necessary for a brown sugar ham glaze. *wink*
- Brandy Adds depth of flavor to the sweet glaze.
- Whole grain mustard Tangy mustard balances the glaze so its not overly sweet.
- Cornstarch For thickening the glaze.
- Ground cumin, coriander, allspice, and cayenne pepper Spice it up, baby!
- Salt Even though ham is salty, the glaze still needs a little salt.
How To Carve A Bone
Place the ham on its flattest side. If there isn’t a flat side, use a carving knife to slice off a small piece of ham from the bottom so the ham will sit flat. Cut slices down to the bone, then cut along the bone to release the slices.
Figuring out how to carve a ham that doesn’t have a bone? Simply slice it. There’s not a thing to worry about here except maybe making sure you have a carving knife and fork to hold everything still.

How To Make Glazed Ham
Preheat the oven to 300 degrees. Trim the ham, removing any excess fat. Score the ham, which means to make crosshatch cuts all over the surface, about ½ inch deep and 1/2 to 1-inch apart. Place the ham in a roasting pan. Bake the ham for 1 ½ hours.
Stir the sugar, mustard and maple syrup together in a bowl. Remove the ham from the oven, and raise the temperature to 375 degrees. Use a brush to coat the ham with the brown sugar glaze, using about half of the glaze. Carefully insert a clove into the center of each cross hatched diamond, if desired.
Return the ham to the oven and bake for another 60 to 90 minutes, brushing on some additional glaze every 30 minutes or so, if you have the time and are in the kitchen. The ham should have an internal temperature of 165 degrees check with a meat thermometer. Transfer the ham to a cutting board and let sit for at least 20 minutes. You are welcome to let the ham cool for longer, or even come to room temperature as well. Slice the ham, thinly or thickly, and serve warm or at room temp.

How To Prepare Baked Ham
Since most hams you buy are already cooked, all you have to do is heat the ham, and if you want, apply a simple glaze.
Prepare the ham by scoring a diamond pattern into the fat and skin, taking care not to cut into the meat itself. This scoring will allow the glaze to soak into the meat and flavor it.
Apply the glaze just before putting it into the oven to bake. Remember, the ham is already cooked, so all we’re doing here is warming it back up again with the glaze. Use a meat thermometer and warm it to 110°F to 120°F.
To finish, baste the ham with its juices and put it under the broiler to brown the skin. Then slice and serve.

What You Need For Ham Glaze

Heres what you need for the Maple Ham Glaze. So few ingredients, its magical how it transforms once baked! Its the combination of the glaze, the caramelization of the fat on the surface of the ham and the salt in the ham itself .
-
Maple syrup is what gives this ham glaze a special little touch. No one can put their finger on it they just know its got something magical about it! Sub with honey in a heartbeat! No maple or honey? Make this Brown Sugar Ham Glaze!
-
Brown sugar adds to the caramelised flavour of the glaze
-
Dijon Mustard is a thickener for the ham glaze AND adds a touch of much needed tang to an otherwise sweet glaze
-
Cinnamon and all spice for a touch of festive spices
-
Oranges for a bit of liquid in the pan thats more interesting than just using water, plus a touch of extra natural sweetness. You cant taste the oranges in the end result once cooked. Orange juice has more flavour than just using water which adds to the flavour of the glaze and also the sauce made using the pan drippings
-
Cloves optional, for studding! I really cant taste it so I do it for visual / traditional purposes only. Also, they are a bit impractical you cant freely baste as you have to dab around the cloves and also you need to remove them before carving. No one wants to bite into a clove!

Tips For The Best Ham Glaze
My biggest piece of advice is not to simmer the glaze for too long, as you will end up with a hard caramel once it begins to cool, and its extremely difficult to slather onto the outside of the ham when glazing. You want to bring it to a gentle simmer and take it off the heat quickly.
I added the pan juices from the ham into the glaze once there were pan juices to use, and WOW! Amazing flavours! My ham wasnt salty though, so make sure you do some taste testing before adding the juices and add the amount you need to alter the flavour even more.

Im a ham junkie. As in cant get enough. Could be because I was raised a stones throw from Smithfield, Virginia and oven roasted ham was a staple in our house. Whatever the reason, Im utterly smitten with the salty, savory bite of this piece of pig. My mother, grandmother and aunts served homemade ham on a regular basis and the only thing that differentiated each persons versions, were the sides they served with it. Aunt Heather served au gratin potatoes. Aunt Lynne preferred potato salad. My grandmother always made angel flake biscuits and my mother liked to switch it up rice salad, pasta salad, three bean salad you name it. The central theme was always the brown sugar glazed ham, and in my humble opinion, this ones the BEST.
Youll love this recipe because its so easy and the list of ingredients is so short. Seriously!
