What Should I Serve With Bbq Ribs

Classic ribs call for the best side dishes! They are truly incredible all by themselves, but I know there is nothing more comforting in a barbecue meal than to bite into a tender rib served alongside your favorite sides.

You always need a good side that is a bit starchy and definitely cheesy. My two favorites are Southern-style baked mac and cheese or these cheesy homestyle scalloped potatoes. Both are a perfect baked dish to go with ribs. Another hot dish is this easy cheesy zucchini rice. It’s delicious and super creamy.

This grilled sriracha corn on the cob or this Mexican corn salad happens to be some great sides that we’ve enjoyed with barbecue. For a more Tex-Mex flavor, this black bean and corn quinoa salad is a hit every time. • Use baking powder for crispier baked bbq chicken wings: One of the keys to my crispy baked wings is baking powder. It helps the wing skin to rise and crisp without drying out the chicken wings. Im using it in this recipe because baked bbq chicken wings taste better when the skin is slightly crisp.
    • Sauce near the end: BBQ sauce will burn if left on the chicken for the entire baking time. So, it is best to save the sauce until the end. This way, the wings can cook through without you having to worry about the sauce burning.

Essentials For Slow Baked Pork Ribs

The flavor in our baked pork ribs recipe begins even before the homemade barbecue sauce comes into play . We like to think of the barbecue sauce as the crowning glory, and its the dry rub that lays the ground work. A dry rub does the same thing as a pork ribs marinade. And its just what it sounds like, a mixture of dry spices thats rubbed into a cut of raw meat. This is going to amplify the flavor that the meat already has, and bring out new ones as well. This method is so effective that it can turn even an inexpensive cut of meat into one of the best things youve ever tasted! Heres what youll need to make your new favorite baked pork ribs:

    The Rest Of The Ingredients

Now we have perfectly cooked and seasoned potatoes and a creamy dressing, its time to add some extra ingredients.

Potato salad is a personal process, and there are lots of opinions out there as to what makes it perfect or the best. The recipe below is our version it includes everything we love, but remember that its your potato salad, so add what you like!

    • Celery and Pickles The celery adds a lovely crunch and our house isnt stable without dill pickles in the refrigerator so adding them is a no-brainer for us. If you dont like pickles in potato salad leave them out .
    • Red Onion I love the sweetness and crunch of red onion in this. To make sure that the onion doesnt overpower the salad with raw onion flavor, I deflame the onions. Its a simple process, simply add cool water to chopped onion and set aside for 10 minutes. The time in the water takes the raw edge off the onion.
    • Hard-Boiled Eggs Maybe its how we were brought up or what were used to but, potato salad without eggs is missing something. Hard-boiled eggs add texture and extra creaminess.
    • Fresh Herbs The most common herbs are parsley and chives, but dill, cilantro, and tarragon all work well. In our recipe below, we use both dill and parsley. Experiment for yourself to see what you love. Add a tablespoon at a time then taste. Also, remember dill and tarragon are a little stronger than other herbs so add accordingly.

    Remove The Silver Skin

One thing you have to remember about preparing ribs is that theres a thin silver skin or membrane along the back of the ribs that must be removed. The membrane is a thick skin that will prevent the ribs from actually falling off the bone.

Its not great to leave it on, because the ribs will be less tender and not as fun to eat.

To remove it is easy. Just turn the ribs over and look for a piece of the membrane around the edges of the meat that you can grab hold of. You can also slide a small knife blade between the silver skin and the ribs and pull up to loosen it.

It is silver in color and forms a very thin layer over the back. When you catch a piece, pull it back, like peeling off a piece of tape. If you get it just right, you can pull the entire membrane off in one piece. Heres a pictorial to help.

Note: If you cant locate the membrane, its possible the butcher has already removed it.

Based on the average temperature of your oven, you can bake BBQ ribs at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for around 20-25 minutes. The Next Best Thing To True Barbecue

    The Spruce / Diana Rattray

In some parts of the country, making barbecued ribs is serious business where the ribs can only be cooked in a smoker. But if you are not of that camp and are open to some nontraditional cooking methods, then oven roasting may be for you.

The rib meat will pull away from the bone when you take a bite, but to get this result requires nearly perfect timing. Don’t be intimidated, though. The ribs can be forgiving, and the low temperature of the oven will help the ribs to slowly reach that state of fall-off-the-bone.

It is important to keep in mind, howeverand those serious rib barbecuers will agreeoven roasting isn’t barbecue. Barbecue needs smoke to chemically alter the flavor and surface of meats. The oven is not going to create that smoke and so, while these pork ribs are a good approximation of those BBQ joint ribs, they’re not exactly the same thing.

Do You Have To Remove The Membrane

Yes, removing the membrane is one of the ways to guarantee that you have the most flavorful and juicy ribs. You may ask why a little piece of skin can make such a big difference in the texture and flavor.

The membrane also known as the silver skin is not like the cartilage or connective tissue around the ribs. No matter how long the membrane is cooked. It does not become soft like the rest of the meat. The longer that it is cooked makes it tougher and chewier. It also keeps the dry rub and BBQ sauce from absorbing into the ribs. This will make them less flavorful and give them a tough texture.

Tips Tricks And Notes For Baked Ribs

    • Bring the meat to room temperature. I like to set the ribs out on the counter around 30 minutes before cooking. Room temperature meat cooks more evenly.
    • Remove the membrane. Leaving the membrane on prevents the meat from being able to absorb the seasonings and results in a much less tender texture.
    • To remove the membrane, slide a knife under the silver skin on the back side of the ribs, then pull it off with your fingers.
    • Broil it. Broiling the ribs uncovered for just a few minutes after they cook gives them that delicious crispy texture. Dont skip this step!
    • Let it rest. After the meat is done cooking, let it rest for 10 minutes before cutting into it so the flavor and moisture can redistribute throughout.
    • Make it your own: this is a great recipe to customize to your own tastes! You could add dry mustard, cayenne pepper, or more or less of the listed spices to create your own rub.
