How Do You Remove The Membrane From Ribs
A lot of pre-packaged ribs already have the membrane removed, but if you bought your ribs straight from a butcher, it might be there . The membrane is the thin layer on the back of the ribs that is white in color. Simply take the tip of your knife and lift of the corner and slowly pull it off! Easy!
How To Remove Membrane From Ribs Before Cooking
Before cooking, I recommend removing the membrane from the back of the ribs. Its not essential to do this, but I find the sauce is better absorbed into the meat when removed.
At one end of the rack, slide a fork or a blunt knife under the membrane and over a bone. Lift the membrane away off of the bone until it begins to tear Use a paper towel to grab hold of the edge of the membrane and pull it off. It may come off in one piece or it may tear into smaller pieces.
Warning / disclaimer. These down here were left cooking for 9 hours on low. See how the meat is melting off the bone?

Youll commonly see two main types of ribs. Both can successfully be made in the oven.
Spareribs
The first type is spareribs, which are also called St. Louis-style ribs . These ribs are larger and meatier than other varieties of ribs. They also tend to be fattier since they come from the ribs closer to the belly of the pig. Note that spareribs often require a longer cook time than baby back ribs.
Baby Back Ribs
The second type of ribs is baby back ribs, also called loin back ribs. These ribs are smaller and leaner than spareribs and come from the ribs closer to the loin of the pig. Because their meat comes from the loin region, baby back ribs tend to be more tender and expensive than spareribs. Learn more about the different types of pork you can find at your local butcher.

Do You Put Water In Bottom Of Roaster For Ham
Its a question many people ask, as the water helps to keep the roaster at a consistent temperature and prevents it from over heating. If you do, it can help keep your roast more moist and flavorful. Water suspended in air creates a vacuum that pulls moisture up into the roast. By doing this, your roast will be more moist and flavorful.
The Best Potatoes To Use
Small, waxy, and thin-skinned potatoes are best for potato salad. Small yellow, white or red potatoes are perfect . They are quick-cooking, and since they are already small, theres no need to chop them before cooking them.
Leave the potatoes whole. Whole cooked potatoes maintain more of their flavor and natural sweetness. Were also partial to the texture of potatoes when they are cooked whole compared to chopped.
If you dont have small, waxy potatoes available, other potatoes will work in their place the texture will be slightly different. We try not to use russet potatoes since they tend to fall apart. If thats all you have, dont worry. Chop them before cooking they are much larger and take a long time when cooked whole.

Do I Need To Flip Ribs While They Are Baking
Yes! I have seen recipes that “set it and forget it”, but this is not one. For the best results, I find baking in 30-minute increments between basting is best. Every time I stop to baste the ribs with more sauce, I flip them.
This gives a good flavor and sauce ratio on all sides, plus it allows the fat to render down into the meat as it slowly cooks. When working with baby back ribs, it’s an easy process since the ribs come in smaller rackers and are easy to handle.

The Rest Of The Ingredients
Now we have perfectly cooked and seasoned potatoes and a creamy dressing, its time to add some extra ingredients.
Potato salad is a personal process, and there are lots of opinions out there as to what makes it perfect or the best. The recipe below is our version it includes everything we love, but remember that its your potato salad, so add what you like!
- Celery and Pickles The celery adds a lovely crunch and our house isnt stable without dill pickles in the refrigerator so adding them is a no-brainer for us. If you dont like pickles in potato salad leave them out .
- Red Onion I love the sweetness and crunch of red onion in this. To make sure that the onion doesnt overpower the salad with raw onion flavor, I deflame the onions. Its a simple process, simply add cool water to chopped onion and set aside for 10 minutes. The time in the water takes the raw edge off the onion.
- Hard-Boiled Eggs Maybe its how we were brought up or what were used to but, potato salad without eggs is missing something. Hard-boiled eggs add texture and extra creaminess.
- Fresh Herbs The most common herbs are parsley and chives, but dill, cilantro, and tarragon all work well. In our recipe below, we use both dill and parsley. Experiment for yourself to see what you love. Add a tablespoon at a time then taste. Also, remember dill and tarragon are a little stronger than other herbs so add accordingly.
Can I Make These Ribs In A Slow Cooker
Yes, you can. For a slow cooker method, add one cup of bbq sauce and one cup of apple juice to the slow cooker with the prepped ribs and use the high setting for 4 hours. If you want to have the charred look, baste with bbq sauce and place under the broiler until the desired appearance is achieved.
Cut the aluminum foil packets open using kitchen shears and fold back the foil to expose the ribs.
- Liberally coat the ribs with your favorite bbq sauce .
- Raise the oven temperature to 400 degrees F. . Place the ribs back in the oven for 20 25 minutes.
*If youre not a fan of sweet barbecue sauces, try adding a little apple cider vinegar to the sauce. And if you like a spicier version you can always add a little of your favorite hot sauce.
If you want to get a little char on the ribs and have them look more like barbecued baby back ribs, set the oven to broil. Allow the ribs to cook under the broiler for 3-5 minutes . How To Pick The Best Pork Rib Rack

There are a few things to look for when youre picking your pork ribs at the grocery store. Head on over to the meat department and dont be afraid to ask for help! Make sure there is plenty of meat covering the bones, otherwise they may fall out while the ribs are cooking. Thats not the fall-off-the-bones juiciness were looking for! Look for pork ribs without too much fat on the surface, since we want meaty ribs, not fatty ones! When it comes to fresh or frozen, fresh is always better but frozen will do in a pinch. Just be sure to check that the edges of the ribs arent dried out, since this could indicate freezer burn.
If youre not buying from behind the case, sometimes a rack of ribs still has a thin membrane covering it. Youll be able to tell its there by the rubbery texture and white coloring. We want to get rid of that, since it will make our ribs tougher and chewier. Not to worry! Its easily removed by taking a paring or butter knife and sticking it under the membrane. Once you peel enough away to get a good hold of the membrane, peel it right off! You may need to use a paper towel to get a better grip. Once youve found the rib rack that checks all the boxes, run, dont walk to check out. Its pork ribs night!

Do You Have To Remove The Membrane
Yes, removing the membrane is one of the ways to guarantee that you have the most flavorful and juicy ribs. You may ask why a little piece of skin can make such a big difference in the texture and flavor.
The membrane also known as the silver skin is not like the cartilage or connective tissue around the ribs. No matter how long the membrane is cooked. It does not become soft like the rest of the meat. The longer that it is cooked makes it tougher and chewier. It also keeps the dry rub and BBQ sauce from absorbing into the ribs. This will make them less flavorful and give them a tough texture.

We like the method this recipe uses, which is to put the barbecue sauce on the ribs after they’re boiled but before they go in the oven. This will allow the ribs to get all the barbecue flavor while the sauce bakes into the ribs.

What Seasonings Are Best For Pork Chops
Similar to chicken breast, pork is mild in flavor, so you have lots of options for adding flavor. Here are a few suggestions:
- Keep it simple and use salt, pepper, a fresh herb like thyme, and lemon wedges scattered around the pan. This is what weve done in our photos, and the recipe shared below.
- For chili powder based seasoning, we love using a combination of ancho or our homemade chili powder, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, and black pepper. Combine one teaspoon of everything listed, except use only 1/2 teaspoon of smoked paprika and 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper.
- We love using a blend of brown sugar, grated lemon zest, and smoked paprika for a sweet citrus rub. Use one tablespoon brown sugar, one teaspoon lemon zest, and 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika.
- A combination of fresh herbs, Dijon mustard, and lemon is classic.
- Italian seasoning, Zaatar seasoning, and taco seasoning are also excellent.
