For this recipe, I bake the chicken thighs at 400°F . If you were to bake them at 350°F instead, you would want to bake them for 40-50 minutes before pulling the bone-in chicken thighs out of the oven.

Add more BBQ sauce if desired, then return your chicken to the oven for 10 more minutes. *Cooking times will vary depending on the size of your chicken thighs.

How To Make Bbq Chicken In The Oven

Oven baked BBQ chicken thighs, cooked on convection to get an extra ...

Roasting BBQ chicken thighs in the oven is such an easy process, and with some foil protecting your baking sheet, the clean-up is a breeze. A lot of people wonder if you put BBQ sauce on chicken before or after baking and we firmly believe that the correct answer is that you do BOTH! More BBQ sauce is always a good thing. Plus, start to finish our BBQ chicken recipe takes only about 25-30 minutes. Lots of that time is downtime, too, so while the chicken bakes, you can be tossing a salad or boiling some corn. In other words, dinner doesnt get much easier or more sure-to-please than this BBQ chicken! Heres how to make it:

  • Make the BBQ sauce! Simmer the BBQ sauce ingredients for a few minutes until the brown sugar has fully dissolved and the flavors have had a chance to meld.

  • Prep the chicken! Salt the chicken thighs and coat them with sauce.

  • Bake the chicken thighs! On a wire rack on a sheet pan in a 425°F degree oven for about 15 minutes. Half way through, flip the chicken and brush it with extra sauce and bake for another 15 minutes.

  • Broil the chicken thighs! This will get them nice and brown on the edges and will really make the sauce concentrated and a little stickyjust the way its supposed to be!

  • Eat the chicken thighs! With extra BBQ sauce on the side, because YUM!

What Kind Of Baking Sheet Should I Use

I cannot recommend enough using a Nordic Ware Natural Aluminum Bakers Half Sheet to make this oven baked BBQ chicken, and to roast literally anything you want. I have two and they are the ONLY baking sheets I will EVER use. Theyre super sturdy, so they dont buckle when the temperature changes . And they conduct heat well to make sure that your food is well cooked on the top and bottom, and they are really good at being non-stick, even though they dont have any non-stick coating .

PLUS, they are only around $12! Go get one!

If you prefer to bake the chicken on a rack, so it doesnt sit in the juices the whole time and crisps up a bit better, this rack nestles in perfectly to the rimmed baking sheet .

Make Bbq Sauce Glaze And Bake

Now, make a quick, lip-smacking homemade BBQ sauce.

In a frying pan , pour the fatty chicken juices in. Add worcestershire sauce, tomato sauce , rice wine vinegar, brown sugar, and black pepper.

Mix well and bring up to a gentle boil on medium heat.

Reduce the sauce to a thick, sticky consistency. This will take about 3 minutes.

Due to the high fat content of this sauce, you’ll find the sauce to get quite bubbly when reducing.

To finish off, return the chicken thighs, skin side up, back into the baking tray. Coat the chicken with the BBQ sauce generously. I use all of the sauce made, distributed evenly across all chicken pieces.

Grill/broil the chicken on the top shelf of the oven for about 4 minutes at 220°C/430°F or high heat.

The skin should be deliciously blistered, rich in colour and lightly charred.

Rest the baked BBQ chicken thighs for about 5 to 10 minutes before serving. Optional: sprinkle with finely chopped fresh coriander for freshness.

If youre looking for a quick and delicious meal, chicken is a great choice. But did you know that chicken can actually help your health? Chicken is an affordable source of protein. According to the latest data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention , one in three Americans dont get enough protein. And that protein deficit can be a big problem. I used to be a total breast girl that was the only chicken I would ever eat. Its really hard to get a juicy chicken breast in the oven though, and forget about crispy. You cant have it both ways. Unless of course were taking chicken thighs into consideration because then you definitely can produce crispy, juicy and tender chicken in just a few steps!

To make these chicken thighs in the oven, I use a simple rub that I use for all kinds of chicken recipes, like my Baked Chicken Breasts and Crispy Baked Chicken Thighs. I use my favorite barbecue sauce that I always have on hand, Sweet Baby Rays. I really love their Hickory and Brown Sugar flavor. You can really use any that you like, or use a homemade sauce if youve got one you love.

    Season Chicken Then Bake

In a small bowl, make a quick spice rub.

The spice rub consists of a blend of garlic powder, onion powder, coriander powder, cumin powder, paprika, salt and pepper.

Combine the spices and give it a quick mix with either a teaspoon or a finger.

Place chicken thighs onto a baking tray, sprinkle with the spice rub on both sides with a drizzle of olive oil. Rub the seasoning into the chicken.

I find the chicken to be sufficiently flavourful without any marinating time . Nonetheless, adding marinating time is always a bonus and the chicken can only taste even better!

If you are thinking of making this for a party , you can prepare the chicken up to this point a day or 2 in advance. On the day, simply take the chicken out of the fridge 30 minutes before baking to let the chicken come up to room temperature.

Bake spice-rubbed chicken thighs on the middle shelf of the oven, skin side up, for 10 minutes. Then, reduce the oven temperature to 200°C/390°F and bake for a further 15 minutes.

The higher heat in the initial 10 minutes helps kickstart the chicken skin to blister and turn lightly golden.

    Colour = flavour!

Once the 25 minutes of cook time is up, remove and transfer the chicken thighs onto a plate and set aside.

Keep the juices and fat at the bottom of the baking tray!

How To Bake Bbq Chicken Thighs In The Oven

This BBQ chicken recipe is super simple, easy to customize with your favorite sauce, and needs just a few minutes of prep.

  • To start, preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. This is the best way to ensure even cooking.
  • Pat the chicken thighs dry with paper towels. You do not need to rinse your chicken. In fact, that can actually spread harmful bacteria rather than eliminate it.
  • Mix up the seasoning rub, which is just salt and pepper, paprika, garlic powder and onion powder. Rub the seasoning all over the chicken, even under the skin. Arrange chicken thighs skin side up on a baking sheet lined with nonstick foil.
  • Brush chicken thighs with a thin layer of the barbecue sauce on both sides, ending skin side up. Bake the chicken in the preheated oven for 20 minutes, then baste with more sauce. Bake for another 15 minutes or until chicken is 165 degrees F on a meat thermometer.
  • If the skin isnt as crispy as you want it to be, move the oven rack up and flip on your broiler. Keep a close on it, the bbq sauce caramelizes quickly and can burn fast. Just a couple of minutes should do the trick.
  • How Do You Keep Chicken Moist When Baking

There are a few things that you can do to prevent your chicken from drying out while baking. One is to use chicken thighs or chicken drumsticks instead of chicken breasts as they have more fat content and will not dry out as easily. Another is to coat the chicken with some cooking oil or other type of fat before baking. This will help to create a barrier so that the moisture will not escape from the chicken while it’s in the oven. Finally, you can also cook the chicken at a lower temperature so that it doesn’t dry out as quickly.

Which Cut Of Chicken Should You Use

The cut of chicken influences how juicy and flavorful the chicken is. For example, chicken breasts are healthy but aren’t as juicy or flavorful as thighs or legs. For this recipe, we recommend bone-in, skin-on chicken thighs, legs, and wings. Bones and skin add so much flavor to the chicken during the cooking process.

But if you want to make this recipe simpler or just prefer the texture, opt for boneless skinless chicken thighs. This cut of meat is also a great option for salads, like the BBQ Chicken Salad with Greek Yogurt Ranch. You can even use this same method to make chicken drummettes for a tasty appetizer.
