Can Hard Boiled Eggs In Oven Explode If Left In The Oven Too Long

When I started sharing my new favorite cooking hack with my friends, this was definitely the number one concern. Most people were afraid that the eggs would explode in the oven. Then those eggs would create a nightmare of a mess to clean up in the oven. I can completely understand that concern!

I have been making hard boiled eggs in the oven for years now and I have never had this problem. I think if the eggs would have to be left in the oven for an excessive amount of time for this to occur. I would not exceed the 30 minutes recommended in this recipe.

I have noticed small brown spots on the eggs when I make them in the oven. I think there is just the spot where the egg touches the muffin tin. The taste is not affected and its usually a very small amount that can be removed if needed.

Also, I, generally, dont have any brown spots when using a mini muffin pan s0 I recommend using the mini pan if you have one of these types of pans.

How Do You Cool A Boiled Egg

Once you remove the eggs from the oven, youre going to want to get them cooled down to make them easy to peel.

  • The easiest way to do this is to grab a large bowl, use the running water from your faucet and fill it about halfway full with cold water, and set the eggs right inside.

Of course you can make slow cooker hard boiled eggs or Instant Pot hard boiled eggs in a jiffy too. If you dont have a pressure cooker or Crockpot though..

This will cool them down in a quick method so that you can easily peel them without worry. This trick works with fresh eggs as well as eggs that have been sitting on the shelves for a while as well.

Can You Hard Boil 24 Eggs

Hard Boiled Eggs in the Oven Recipe

Certainly, you would just need a larger dish or if you had a high sided baking sheet you could make a large batch of sheet pan eggs. The hardest thing with that would be that youd have to find an even larger pan that would fit into that could have water in it. If you didnt the bottom and sides would get rather hard vs. the middle.

For a smaller batch, like 6 you could use a loaf pan or make it as an Instant Pot egg loaf under high pressure. That method uses a ramekin atop a trivet with a cup of water underneath to steam it. Of course to pressure cook means faster than other methods.

  • Either way you would crack the eggs into the dish youre using
  • Since there are no shells you dont need an ice bath at the end
  • I would highly recommend spraying your baking dish with olive oil cooking spray first

When you are done you can chop up and add them into all sorts of things like homemade egg salad sandwiches which we love.

How To Peel A Hard Boiled Egg

My number one tip for peeling a hard boiled egg is to do an ice bath. Grab a large bowl, fill it with cold, ice water and drop the eggs inside when they are done cooking. This is super helpful for getting them to peel easier.

After that, I like the tap and roll technique.

  • Tap the egg several times on both sides on your counter.
  • Roll the egg across the counter with the palm of your hand.
  • Then, start peeling away. Dont be too worried about tiny pieces left because you can just rinse them off.

Baked Hard Boiled Eggs Are Easy To Make And A Game Changer

Sure boiling eggs isnt hard. Not hard at all. However, when you need to make 24. or maybe 48 for Easter or a giant gathering, it takes a lot less work to throw them in the oven. Plus youll still get the same delicious hard boil eggs without all the extra work or mess.

I have a large family and all my kids love hard boiled eggs. They usually eat 2 or 3 at a time. I just dont have a pot for the stove to boil a lot of eggs at a time.

Also, it takes WAY too long to boil them on the stovetop and half the time I would mess them up and they would crack so then I would have to start over all again. So most of the time, I just stopped making them.

Making baked hard boiled eggs is a complete game changer in my house and I hope you enjoy it as well!

What Kind Of Pan Do You Put The Eggs In

Hard Boiled Eggs in the Oven Recipe

In theory you can put the eggs in any kind of oven safe pan or dish as long as the eggs dont roll around and are evenly spaced apart. Here are my recommended methods.

Silicone Muffin Pan This is what I recommend most because the silicone doesnt get as hot as metal. Metal may leave a few tiny brown marks on the eggs. These marks are purely aesthetic and dont change the taste or texture.

Metal Muffin Pan This works just as good as a silicone muffin pan. However, the eggs may have 2-3 tiny brown spots on them where they came into contact with the metal muffin pan. If you want to avoid these spots but dont have a silicone muffin pan, you can crunch up squares of parchment paper in the bottom of the muffin pan for the egg to rest on. The parchment paper acts as a sufficient barrier between the egg and pan to avoid the small brown contact marks.

Directly on the Rack You can place the eggs directly on the oven rack. However, this isnt the best option because the oven rack with leave larger brown contact marks. You also risk the possibility of an egg cracking in your oven and creating a mess!

Do You Know What The Best Part Is

The best part of it allThe egg shell comes off a lot easier than it does with the traditional boiling method and the smell is much better! Now you can make more eggs at once without the fuss. It is a win-win!

If you have any trouble with peeling the eggs, try using running water to get under the shell membrane and then the shell will just slide off. It really is easy!

Five More Tips To Make Your Hard Boiled Eggs Egg

    • All ovens are different, so experiment with two or three eggs to begin until you figure out how many minutes it takes to produce the texture of yolk thats perfect for you! Use an oven thermometer to ensure the temperature. My research indicates 325 degrees is ideal.
    • Store eggs with the larger blunt side up. The air sac is located on that end of the egg and the longer an egg is stored, the larger the air sac becomes, which moves the yolk closer to the center of the egg. When cooked, the yolk is more perfectly centered in the white. Who knew?
    • Dont use super fresh eggs. I get my eggs from a farm, and they are often only a few days old. Theinner membrane clings tightly to the shell of a fresh egg. However, taking the cooked eggs directly from a hot oven to ice water makes the contents of the eggs shrink and forms a gap that allows much easier peeling.
    • Pay attention to the size of your eggs when its time to try this. My experiment began with fresh eggs from young hens , small but delicious! I cooked them for only 23 minutes. Large and extra-large eggs take longer to cook than small or medium eggs. An extra-large egg can take 30 minutes.
    • Even if you dont like eggs, tuck this idea away when its time to dye Easter eggs!! You can do loads of eggs in a single batch this way!

We love hard boiled eggs as a healthy, filling snack. We just sprinkle them with kosher salt and seasoned pepper. Yum!

  • Put raw eggs in a muffin tin and bake at 325 degrees for 25 minutes.

    How To Make An Omelet

How to Make Hard-Boiled Eggs in the Oven

Making an omelet is easy and can be a great breakfast or snack. All you need is a good omelet pan. If you dont have a pan, you can use a skillet, but it may take longer. Most people use the whisk attachment for mixing eggs, but you can also use a fork. If youre making an omelet to eat right away, its important to start cooking as soon as youre ready. You dont want the eggs to set while theyre still raw. When its ready, slide the eggs into the pan and cook them for about a minute or until theyre no longer runny. Turn the heat down to low and pour in some salt and pepper. Mix the eggs with a whisk to make a batter. Take the pan out of the oven. Put a lid on the pan and let the eggs set for 2 to 3 minutes before flipping them over. Slide the pan back into the oven to cook the other side. When its done, slide the omelet out of the pan.

    Kitchen Hack: Hard

As far as seasonings use what you normally would if you were preparing over easy or poached eggs. I mean salt and pepper is a given but some like a bit of paprika or dry Sriracha for heat. You will need two dishes for this, one to hold water to cool nice and even and a smaller one to fit inside.

  • You can use however many eggs youd like, 12 fit into this 11×8 pan that fit into a 13×9 dish
  • grab these 3 oven safe dishes so you can make less or more however youd like
  • the smaller one fits into the medium size and fits 6-8 well
  • Water in the larger dish will help to not burn and overcook the eggs
  • Season with salt and pepper ideally before baking
  • Then when it is done a cutting board is handy to have. Using a knife you can loosen the edges which should be easy as long as you lightly sprayed the dish with non stick spray beforehand. You can make crispy toast in the oven and serve this right on top with a dollop of avocado spread.

OH Yes this is by far my favorite start to the day ever.

    How To Cook Hard

Traditionally, hard-boiled eggs are cooked in a pot of boiling water. However, there are a variety of other ways to cook hard-boiled eggs that have the same exact result such as in a slow cooker, instant pot, sous vide, hard-boiled egg cooker and the oven. So, technically you would call them hard-cooked eggs instead of hard-boiled eggs but that can get confusing and is really splitting hairs anyway.

I usually recommend making them in the oven because the oven doesnt take very long and it gives you consistent results every single time. Another benefit of using the oven method is that it doesnt require a special appliance/kitchen tool.
