How Long Should I Cook Pork Chops In The Oven
The cook time for baked pork chops will vary depending on how thick your chops are. That said, they wont need very long in the oven.
For example, boneless pork chops about 1-inch thick will need a 2 to 3 minute sear in the skillet and then 8 to 15 minutes of bake time in the oven.
Thinner chops will cook much quicker, and thicker chops may take a few minutes longer a temperature thermometer is your best bet for checking doneness.
Pork is done when the internal temperature reaches 145 degrees Fahrenheit.
If you do not have a thermometer, you will know they are done if the juices run clear when cutting into the chops.
At What Temperature Are Pork Chops Done
For best results, use a meat thermometer to test for doneness. Pork chops are done when the internal temperature at the thickest part reaches 145 degrees F, but because the temperature rises as they rest, its best to remove then at 140 degrees F.
I recommend a probe thermometer like this, so you dont have to monitor . A regular instant read thermometer will work, though.
If you dont have a thermometer, you can still use my time range as a guide. Just know that the risk of overcooking is a bit higher, particularly with boneless pork chops.

What Seasonings Are Best For Pork Chops

Similar to chicken breast, pork is mild in flavor, so you have lots of options for adding flavor. Here are a few suggestions:
- Keep it simple and use salt, pepper, a fresh herb like thyme, and lemon wedges scattered around the pan. This is what weve done in our photos, and the recipe shared below.
- For chili powder based seasoning, we love using a combination of ancho or our homemade chili powder, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, and black pepper. Combine one teaspoon of everything listed, except use only 1/2 teaspoon of smoked paprika and 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper.
- We love using a blend of brown sugar, grated lemon zest, and smoked paprika for a sweet citrus rub. Use one tablespoon brown sugar, one teaspoon lemon zest, and 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika.
- A combination of fresh herbs, Dijon mustard, and lemon is classic.
- Italian seasoning, Zaatar seasoning, and taco seasoning are also excellent.

- Pork chops: Do your best to purchase chops that are at least 1-inch thick. 1 and 1/4 inches is even better. It may seem like thinner pork chops would cook more quickly, but the downside is that they dry out far more easily, and theres not much less pleasant than that! My go-to for high-quality thick-cut pork chops is ButcherBox.
- Spices: paprika, onion powder, garlic powder, oregano, kosher salt, and fresh-cracked black pepper combine to make the most enticing rub that perfectly complements porks mild flavor.
For a tasty variation, try adding 1-2 tablespoons of brown sugar to the seasoning mixture for a touch of sweetness. The sugar also will lightly caramelize as they sear and bake, adding more texture.

How To Choose Your Pork Chops
When it comes to selecting your pork chops, I always recommend at least an inch thick if you can get them. How long they take to cook in the oven depends on how thick the pork chops are. If they are the normal size then they can take anywhere from 25-30 minutes. However, if they are thicker they can take 35-40 minutes. I adore a good one inch thick pork chop and if I can, I will choose those. Ask your local grocery store butcher if they can cut you pork chops an inch thick.
Do Baked Pork Chops Need To Be Covered
Some baked pork chop recipes do require that the pan is covered with either foil or a lid. It creates steam and ensures that the meat is tender and juicy. Those recipes typically require a long cook time and may add vegetables to the pan, and some uncover the chops to finish browning them at a higher temperature. This recipe takes a fast-cook approach, searing the chops first to lock in the juices then roasting them quickly. Between searing and roasting, the total cook time is about 16 minutes, so theres no need to cover the pan.

Why Let Pork Chops Rest
Not letting pork chops rest is among the biggest mistakes you can make when cooking this protein! If the meat is sliced immediately after being removed from the heat source, the juices are still running at peak temperature and will literally spill out onto the plate, both making a mess and making your meal less tender and juicy. By resting the chops for just 3 minutes, you give the juices a chance to be reabsorbed.

How To Test Pork Chops For Doneness
To check the temperature, insert an instant-read thermometer into the thickest part of the chop . The thickness of a pork chop will determine its final cooking time, regardless of whether it’s boneless or bone-in. Chops typically range in thickness from ¾ inch to 1½ inches. The USDA updated its doneness guidelines in 2011, noting that pork cooked to 145 degrees Fahrenheit is just as safe as pork cooked to 160 degrees Fahrenheit. At this doneness, the pork is pinker than many people are used to, but the meat is juicier and more flavorful. If you’d rather, you can always cook your pork chop to the previous standard of 160 degrees Fahrenheit.
