How To Clean The Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer
Both the interior and exterior of the oven can be wiped down with a damp cloth. Unfortunately, none of the included accessories are dishwasher-safe, so they’ll all need to be hand-washed. While the wire rack, broiling rack, and pizza pan are easy to wipe down, the air fry basket and roasting pan required more effort to get clean post-use.
It’s best to follow the recommendation of using the broiling rack nestled into the roasting pan when cooking any foods that might release oil or grease, as that will result in an easier clean up process. During testing, reheating fried chicken in the dedicated air fry basket resulted in oil dripping down to the heating elements and the crumb tray, which was difficult to clean.
How Easy Is It To Set Up
Unpacking the oven took longer than I was used to. Because of the wealth of accessories included with the oven, there was a lot to remove before could get the actual oven unit out of the box. Once I got it unwrapped and placed on my counter it was pretty much ready to go.
The oven racks were self-explanatory and I loved that the air fry basket acts as its own oven rack, allowing it to hold even more food. It took me a moment to realize what the crumb collector was, but once I noticed the opening at the bottom of the oven, it clicked and I slid it in with ease. All the pieces felt well constructed, I didn’t struggle to insert any of the racks and they all felt secure when seated. Overall this oven is a really well-constructed appliance.
I took a look a the manual which included a “Before First Use” portion and I followed those instructions to the letter. I first washed the grates and crumb collector with warm soapy water. Then I rinsed the inside of the oven with a damp cloth. Finally, I set the oven to the “Pizza” setting and let it run for its preset 20-minute cycle. At that point, the oven was ready to use.
All told, it took me around 30 minutes to get the oven unpacked and ready to cook.

Fast And Easy Cooking
Its not only the cleaning that is quick. The oven operates quite fast. I think its the fastest countertop oven Ive ever had. It heats up in minutes and is ready to go. But take care if you have small children around, because the exterior warms up quickly too, faster than youd expect.
It also has a loud alarm that rings when the cooking process is over. I often leave the kitchen and let it do all the work. After all, thats what I want from kitchen appliances. They have to earn their place on my countertop by making my life easier. The Brevilles Smart Oven Air really does that.

Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro Review: Ease Of Use And Cleaning

The Breville has an LCD display that is controlled by two buttons and two dials. On the panel, in addition to settings for air frying, toasting, baking and broiling, there are also settings for slow cooking, dehydrating, proofing and reheating among others. With a little trial and error, you can easily figure out how to program the oven. Included with the oven are an oven rack, air fryer basket, broiling rack, enamel roasting pan, 12-inch nonstick pizza pan and a crumb tray. On the oven door, it tells you which rack positions to use for various cooking functions.
While its cooking, some surfaces of the Breville get excessively hot. The stainless steel top of the oven reached 196°F and the glass door reached 252°F, temps hot enough to cause a burn. On the positive side, the handle and the controls remain cool to the touch. As it operates, the Breville has a dBA reading of 61.4, which is just above the average for air fryers.
The Breville has some nice extras. Theres an interior oven light that makes it convenient to check on your food as it cooks. You also have the option of changing the volume of the buzzer, so you can lower it if you find it too loud and increase it if you want to hear it from another room. When you use the middle rack positions, the rack will automatically pop out to give you easy access to your food. Like all Breville appliances, this product has a cord plug with a loop to make it easy to pull the cord out of a wall socket.

IMPORTANT: If your recipe features foods that may drip , use the grilling rack nested inside of the roasting pan instead of the air fryer basket.

If youre like me, you probably always try to find better ways to do certain things. Dont get me wrong, I love to cook if I could, Id spend half the day just trying out different recipes. Unfortunately, time doesnt stretch to accommodate my hobbies, so I have to make do with what little time I have.
So whenever I try out a new kitchen gadget, the usefulness and efficiency of it are always the first things I look at. With the Breville BOV900BSS Smart Oven, I was satisfied almost right from the start. It wasnt perfect, of course not, but it came as close as possible for me. Im a rather demanding shopper after all, I want value for my money.
I love Brevilles handling of technology. They give their products unique and powerful designs and control systems.
This oven, for example, features a large LED display and a number of dial controls, easier to use with wet hands, instead of buttons. The Breville allows quick temperature and time adjustments. Plus, it has several preset modes for general heat levels, including toast, roast, broil, pizza, cookies, and reheat. Ive never needed anything more!

How It Stacks Up
The Joule Oven is Brevilles first attempt at making a truly connected Smart Oven, with features targeted more toward the home cook who wants to learn to cook more sophisticated meals but needs the extra guidance that recipe testing and app control bring to the table. And it does deliver for this type of cook.
We do think that it may disappoint those looking for more advanced functions or customizability. The Joule Oven lacks the steam and sous vide combi oven features and temperature probe-based functions that some of its smart oven rivals offer, limiting its usefulness for true precision cooking, which was surprising, given the Joule brands history in sous vide precision cooking.
Still, we are hopeful Breville will iterate on the idea and add functionality in subsequent Joule ovens. But for now wed recommend this one mostly to beginners wanting a tool that amounts to a built-in cooking instructor.

A Few Thoughts On The Hybrid Ovens That Didn’t Make The Cut
The Cuisinart Digital Air Fryer Toaster Oven: This hybrid convection oven and air fryer wasn’t terrible and it certainly had one of, if not the most powerful, air fry functions. That proved to be a blessing and curse since some of the food I cooked burned on the edges and cooked unevenly — I think due in part to the high-octane super convection fan. This air fryer oven also had my least favorite interface, and I found myself mashing my fingers on the dials and buttons in frustration at times just hoping I’d get to the right setting since it never seemed to do what I wanted with ease. It’s also not cheap and thus not an oven I’d recommend.
Calphalon Precision Air Fry Oven: The Calphalon scored high marks in the toast test with an even browning, but that’s about where the accolades ended. This oven was slow to preheat, had trouble holding a consistent temperature and the air fry function was among the weakest. It also has no internal light, which most of them do. I admittedly do like the look of it and the interface is elegant and simple to use. This oven can also be had for about $150, so it is among the more budget-friendly options.

Final Thoughts On The Breville Joule Oven Air
The second, in what I hope eventually becomes a long line of kitchen appliances bearing the name Joule, is a resounding success. This oven is large enough to compete with your main oven, and is a good bit smarter too. After almost three weeks of intense use, Ive started using my main oven to store extra pots and pans. Its lows are gentle enough to proof bread and dehydrate fruit, and its highs are enough to dish out surprisingly good pizza. While its great alone, pairing it with the Joule Oven App unlocks serious precision potential, and with guided video instructions, you may even pick up a few skills along the way. Those looking for a countertop oven with serious potential, look no further than Breville Joule Oven Air-Fryer Pro.

Cooking A Roast Chicken

Roasting chicken is one of those dishes that always makes me wish I had a convection oven. Hot moving air makes skin crispy and allows the entire chicken to cook equally and evenly. By adding a gentle breeze to a traditional oven you almost eliminate the possibility of overcooked legs and undercooked breasts!
When I saw the picture on the Breville Smart Oven packaging, I knew that I had to test out a roast chicken in this oven as soon as I could.
To begin I set the Smart Oven Air to the roast setting, with the temperature set to 375°F and time set for 1 hour. Then I seasoned the outside of a 3-4 pound chicken with salt and pepper.
Next, I trussed the chicken with butcher’s twine. Trussing or tying your bird is a really important step when roasting a chicken or turkey. Regardless of the method, by tying your bird beforehand, you allow the chicken an even greater opportunity to roast evenly.
Finally, I placed the bird on the top rack of the enamel roasting rack pan and placed the pan in the oven at the “roast” rack position. I closed the door and settled in to wait for the chicken to be cooked.

Handy Little Oven Air Fryer Is Just An Added Bonus Not Main Feature
This BOV860 oven replaced my blown up BOV845. Thankfully the old oven still had 1 month warranty left so I just paid the difference.
The difference between the 2 models is the Air Fryer feature which all they’ve done is replace the same fan-forced oven blade with a faster one, otherwise its practically the same thing but $150 more.
After testing the Air Fryer feature I did notice that steam would rush out of the unit faster compared to standard oven feature so it does appear t…
