The Best Toaster Oven

Weve been testing toaster ovens since 2015 and have two favorites: the compact Panasonic FlashXpress and the large Cuisinart Chef’s Convection.

The Cuisinart is still the only toaster oven weve tested that includes a ceramic pizza stonemost other models include only a flimsy metal pan.

The single dial control on the Cuisinart functions as a combined start/stop button and timer. Though the Cuisinarts dial is not as intuitive as those on some other models weve tested, its easy to get the hang of after a few uses. The Cuisinart also comes with a three-year limited warranty, while most similarly priced competitors include only one-year warranties.

How To Choose A Toaster Oven

If youre simply toasting bread, waffles or bagels, a regular two or four-slice toaster does the job just fine. But todays countertop ovens offer so much versatility and convenience toaster ovens barely captures what they do that once you invest in a good model, youll likely never go back to a plain ol toaster again.

These ovens do take up quite a bit of room on your counter. But you wont mind leaving them out all the time because they come in so handy. They are especially helpful during hotter weather, when you can bake anything from cookies to pizza to fries to a whole chicken without heating up the house with your traditional oven. Its also helpful that on all of the toasters we tested, the interfaces are all so easy to operate, youll be able to start cooking without referring to the manual.

Most of the models we tested feature nonstick inner surfaces, adjustable wire racks and baking pans and they all include removable crumb/drip trays. Some models included extra racks, broiler pans, pizza pans and stones, and air fry baskets, so while youre shopping youll want to look for the accessories that suit your favorite recipes.

All the toaster ovens we tested recommend hand-washing for all included accessories, save the Wolf, where the crumb tray, baking pan and broil rack are dishwasher safe. That said, we have some expert tips on keeping your toaster clean if things get really grimy.

Theres a lot to love about this compact, stainless steel toaster oven. The smallest of those we tested, it can be stored away in a large cabinet, making it ideal for those short on counter space. Featuring six cooking functions , it has five shade controls and a wide temperature range . We loved the auto-eject rack that makes access a cinch, gave it high praise for its performance on waffles and we appreciated that one of the dual heating elements acted as an interior light so you could easily see what was going on inside. It also doesnt require preheating time, so if youre reheating a couple slices of pizza or warming up a sandwich, your food will be ready in just a few minutes. Nits? Because of the small size, it cant handle more than four slices of bread at a time, you cant add time or change the temperature while youre cooking and the temperature presets are set at odd intervals . But as the most affordable of those we tested, for single cooks or those setting up their first kitchens, this is an excellent choice.

What I Didnt Like:

  • Potentially unsafe cord: The cord lacks a third prong so you cant really ground your oven which, in such a powerful device, is a small but valid concern.
  • Long preheating time: While this toaster oven does offer a Turbo Convection option to preheat and bake at the same time, preheating takes longer than an average oven, especially when using the pizza stone.
  • Short timer options: The timer tops up at 2 hours, so if you need more time youll have to manually come back to add it.

In addition, the large size of it makes it better for customers with a lot of countertop space.

What It’s Like To Use

The toaster oven is incredibly simple to use. I’ve baked everything from cupcakes and croissants to salmon and potatoes in it without any hassle. I also regularly make pizza with the included pizza stone, and it turns out a perfect, crispy crust every time so long as I use the pizza setting and let the stone heat up first.

Cuisinart put a nice crisp screen on the front of the toaster oven along with a dial you turn to run through the various preset cooking functions. You can choose between toast, bagel, bake, pizza, and other settings to cook any kind of food to perfection. You can also adjust the temperature to your liking and ignore the modes.

I particularly love using the toast setting, because you can decide the shade of your toast on a scale from 1 to 6 with 1 being the lightest and 6 being the darkest. I use the toast function to make garlic bread and sandwiches with melted cheese in them.

The oven shuts off when the preset baking time is over, too, so you won’t burn your toast unless you chose the wrong setting for your bread.

Normally, during the summer months I have to bake less often or risk turning my apartment into an inferno because big ovens pump out so much heat. With this toaster oven, I could still bake and keep my kitchen fairly cool well, cooler than I would if I’d baked those croissants in the actual, full-size oven. It’s also a great help during the holidays when you need to cook a lot of things at once and the oven is quickly filled up with dishes.

Should You Buy The Cuisinart

The Cuisinart is a solid, upper-tier performer that will function well in most kitchens. However, it is priced similarly to other slightly better-performing models, so it would not be our first recommendation for most people looking for a toaster oven. Its dual cook function is unique and interesting and may make this a good choice for people who often cook things that require two different cooking stages. The Cuisinart has a reasonable list price, but other similarly-priced models perform better, so we’d have a hard time calling it a great value.

Cuisinart TOB

This toaster oven has an interesting automation feature called The Dual Cook. With it you can combine two baking functions or temperature settings in one cooking session.

Say youre baking bread. You can program Dual Cook to bake your bread and, once its baked, automatically raise the temperature to get that golden finish. Combining it with the Keep It Warm feature allows you to leave your food inside the oven until you are ready to put it on the table. Very nifty.

How It Started

Cuisinart began in 1971, when Carl and Shirley Sontheimer decided to improve upon the French Robot Coupe and adapt it for American home cooks. The company is now synonymous with the home food processor, which gained almost immediate acclaim from Julia Child, among other celebrity chefs.

Though Cuisinart is best known for its food processor, it has branched out, and we recommend Cuisinarts electric kettle, two-slot toaster, and roasting panall of surprisingly good quality considering how different they are from the chopping machine that made them famous.

What I Liked:

  • Great insulation: The TOB-260N1 insulation is pretty good and it barely releases heat from the oven, keeping it fairly safe as long as you dont touch the front crystal. This is good with you have little ones around.
  • Easy to use: As weve mentioned before, the straightforward navigation makes it unlikely for you to keep checking your manual.
  • Versatility: It has all the presets you will need, plus its an air fryer. It halso has the Dual Cook feature that allows you to program acooking session with two features or temperatures so that you dont have to check up on your oven as much.
  • Quiet: The insulation also keeps your kitchen quiet, regardless of which features youre using.
  • Easy cleanup: The location of the crumb tray and the interior walls makes your oven very easy to clean, even after a messy experience.
  • Great visibility: With a clean large window and a bright light, checking up on your food only takes a quick glance.

How We Tested

Our testing pool included nine toaster ovens ranging in price from $58 to $750 some included special features such as convection oven, air fry, dehydrator, bread proofing and more. When pertinent, we additionally tested those cooking modes.

While all the models performed well in our toasting and cooking tests, which included making toast, waffles, frozen potato skins, refrigerated break apart and bake cookies, as well as crispy chickpeas for air fry modes and frozen french fries for convection modes. Some toaster ovens did a better job when it came to achieving an even browning, better crisping, faster preheating and more. We also found differences in interface, included accessories and versatility.

To test performance, we used four typical recipes youd prepare in a toaster oven in all models.

For models featuring air fry, we made the same crispy chickpea recipe, checking for crispness, evenness of cooking and noting how long each batch needed to cook to reach optimum doneness. For convection ovens, we made frozen crinkle-cut french fries and roasted veggies, again noting how evenly they cooked, crispness vs. softness and time.

We also looked at warranty coverage, customer service accessibility, and price not just paying attention to affordability, but in particular, making sure that any higher-priced models we examined were worth the additional cost over budget models.
