How Long To Cook & What Temperature
The most important thing to remember when using a convection oven for your frozen pizza is that you have to adjust both the cook temperature and the amount of time for cooking.
As a general rule of thumb, you should reduce the cook temperature by 25 degrees and reduce the cook time by 25% to get a perfectly cooked frozen pizza from the convection oven.
Give Your Pizza Time To Cool
Whether you have cooked your pizza in an oven or microwave, allow it some time to rest before slicing it. 3 to 5 minutes will be ideal for most pizzas to cool.
The resting time is important not only in allowing the pizza to reach the perfect and safest temperature for eating it also allows the cheese that melted earlier some time to solidify a little, making cutting up the pizza less messy.
Cooking Frozen Pizza On The Oven Rack
Frozen pizza has a rigid form as the pizza itself has already been par-cooked, which is why frozen pizza generally only needs around 10-15 minutes in a regular oven to cook.
When you put a frozen pizza on the oven rack, the dough wont fall between the gaps of the rack due to its rigid structure.
Instead, the gaps in the rack will provide more heat exposure to the bottom of the dough, allowing for an even crisp overall.
The best part about cooking frozen pizza on the oven rack is that it involves little to no washing up and cleaning.
You wont need to scrub away at a baking tray, nor will you have to ferociously clean sticky dough from the rack or the oven itself.
However, there are some downfalls to cooking frozen pizza on the oven rack.
While frozen pizza offers a fairly solid structure, once it starts to thaw out in the oven, the edges of the pizza can easily fall between the gaps.
This can lead to cheese and toppings falling off the sides of the pizza and can make it harder to take the pizza off the rack. Still, far less messy than cooking raw dough on the rack.
Secondly, not all frozen pizzas can be cooked directly on the oven rack.
Some frozen pizzas will have been made with raw dough, which means that once it thaws out in the oven, youre dealing with raw dough falling through the gaps in the rack.
To prevent this, its best that you read the cooking guidelines before you assume that you can cook a frozen pizza on the rack.

Bake It Like The Pizzerias Do
Nothing compares to the authentic, freshly baked pizza from an actual pizzeria. There’s no denying that frozen pizzas don’t even come close. What makes commercial pizza that much tastier is the type of oven used in the process, specifically the kinds of temperatures it reaches. As Cooking Light reveals, pizzerias typically cook their pizzas at about 700 degrees Fahrenheit, sometimes taking those temperatures even higher.
Now, most household-grade ovens don’t get nearly as hot, but you can get pretty similar results if you use the same flash-baking method that the pros do. Simply set your oven to its highest bake setting and leave your pizza in for five to eight minutes.
Make sure your oven isn’t in broil mode or that you let your pizza bake for longer than eight minutes, as it can go from golden-and-crisp to burned-to-a-crisp pretty quickly. For results that are even more pizzeria-like, Cooking Light recommends using a preheated cast iron pan or a pizza stone. By the time you remove your store-bought pizza from the oven, it’ll hardly resemble the frozen brick you took out of the box.

Cooking Raw Pizza Dough On The Oven Rack
So, youve just spent the last few hours slaving over your homemade pizza dough, allowing enough time for it to proof properly, and decorating the top with your favorite toppings and sauce.
Youve just put it on the oven rack inside a preheated oven, but little do you know about the mess that is to come.
Once the raw dough warms up in the oven, it wont cook straight away. Instead, its going to melt if there are gaps beneath the surface it is residing on.
This means that the raw dough will droop between the grates of the oven rack, bringing your toppings with it and ruining all of your hard work.
It wont be salvageable. Instead, youll be left with the remains of a once-perfect raw homemade pizza dough, melted and burned into your oven grate and the bottom of your oven.
Cleaning such a mess is nothing short of a nightmare.
Remember what we said about the rigid structure of frozen pizza? Yeah, raw dough is the complete opposite of that.
To make pizza dough into your desired shape, you must stretch it out, because when it cooks it will shrink.
As a result of this stretching, the dough becomes thin and filled with air, which is possibly the least stable surface.
As well as the thin dough surface, youve also got to think about the weight of the toppings.
Its always recommended using less sauce and toppings than you might think to prevent uneven cooking, but this is also to prevent the dough from collapsing underneath the weight of everything on top of it.

Tested: With And Without A Tray/pan
For the second experiment I tried to test the one change I suspect many people make placing the pizza on a tray instead of on the rack. I know I certainly used to do this, worried cheese and oil would drip all over my oven. I love eating, but I hate cleaning the oven almost as much.
Other than using a tray for one half, I cooked both halves exactly as per the packet directions.
And this time I used a cheap deeper dish pizza.
The box directions on this pizza were very similar to the other brand:
- Cook the pizza from frozen.
- Place the pizza directly on the oven rack .
- Pre-heat the oven to 450°F , or 410°F for a fan-forced/convection oven.
- Cook it for 12 to 13 minutes until the pizza is heated through and the cheese is melted.
I cooked half of the frozen pizza exactly this way. I placed the other half on a tray and put it in the oven at the same time.
Lightly Brush The Crust With Oil
While the pizza is still flipped over brush it with oil. Similar to roasting vegetables, the oil will help the crust brown and crisp as it bakes on the pan.
Also, it will make the crust more flavorful. I highly recommend using garlic-flavored avocado or olive oil if you have some.
Once youve oiled the crust, invert the pizza pan over it. Holding the plastic in place against the pizza, carefully flip the pizza, the pan, and the plastic right side up.
Remove the plastic and rearrange any toppings or cheese that may have fallen off during flipping.
Now its time to bake your pizza!

The Clever Trick That Will Take Your Frozen Pizza To The Next Level
Frozen pizza is widely known as one of the most convenient dinner options out there. There’s not much you have to do except removing the plastic, stick it in the oven straight from the freezer, and set a timer. But what this type of pizza makes up in time and effort, it severely lacks in flavor and quality. No matter what brand you get, frozen pizza almost always seems to have that same soggy cardboard texture and waxy cheese taste.
The good news is that, if you’re not ready to kick your frozen pizza habit, there’s a way to upgrade the stuff so it won’t taste quite as much like, well, frozen pizza. According to Kitchn, the key here is getting the temperature right. And that’s not just the temperature of the oven, but the temperature of the pizza itself when it goes into the oven.
The instructions on the pizza box warn you not to thaw it to avoid contamination, but that’s precisely what’s setting you up for failure. Thawing the pizza beforehand yields significantly better results. What’s more, Giordano’s confirmed it’s perfectly safe to do so, as long as you put the pizza in the oven as soon as it’s fully thawed. But don’t go just yet, as there’s a bit more to the process.
