Details Of Repair Of Gas Appliance Igniters

How to Install a Gas Cooktop – Detailed Instructions

The igniters on the LP gas in-counter stovetop described here had been annoying since shortly after this appliance was installed.

Turning on the gas burner is supposed to cause it to ignite automatically. But instead the burner blows, blasts, or never ignites, and the igniter clicks continuously. Or the burner will ignite, but the igniter won’t stop clicking.

There are plenty of explanations about how these gas flame igniters work and how they are smart enough to turn off after the flame ignites.

Below we focus on how to repair igniters that are just maddeningly bad behavers.

Is It Better To Cook With Gas Or Electric

Efficiency, speed, temperature, and contamination.

Generally, gas is less expensive than electric and is considered more efficient. Gas stoves heat up faster than electric stoves, meaning that you can start cooking sooner. With gas, you have more control over the temperature, making it easier to cook food evenly. Gas is also considered to be less likely to cause contamination than electric.

What Is The Difference Between Convection And True Convection

True Convection is an oven setting that includes installing an extra heating element and a fan in the oven. By adding an additional heating unit and fan that circulates the hot air, True Convection is great for ensuring that cookies or cakes baked on different racks will bake through at the same rate, rather than the cookies closest to the bottom heat source cooking faster than those on the rack higher up.

If you don’t see mention of “True Convection” or “European Convection”, but do see the word “convection” in a range’s specs, it might mean that the unit lacks an additional heating element, but does have a fan to circulate the hot air. While you don’t get the full baking and cooking effect that you would with True Convection, the added heat circulation can cook or bake food more evenly than it would without a fan.

There are also ranges out there that do not offer convection options at all these ovens aren’t bad, it will just take more time to cook and bake food all the way through. If you’re a frequent baker or cook, convection can be a great time saver, but your dinners won’t suffer unduly without it.

Gas Stoves Provide Precise Temperature Control

Whether you are trying to get something to boil or hot enough for frying, or you just need to warm some soup, a gas stove allows you that ability. You dont have to worry about your burner having to take time to heat up or cool down. Whatever temperature you are looking for, it is all in the flame. Turn it higher or lower and your flame will follow. You are in control.

Smart Slide-In Double Oven Dual-Fuel Range with Self-Clean Convection

This Café dual fuel range resembles a professional range but at half the cost.

Unlike a freestanding range, which is unattached to any walls or cabinetry a slide-in range blends seamlessly with either side of the countertops due to the lip of the range that overlaps them.

In other words, the range sits flush with the counters, which gives off a built-in look.

This slide-in also eliminates the bulky background. The controls are on the front panel, which eliminates the need for the back panel. Now you wont have to reach over a hot pot to adjust the burner or the oven temperature.

The benefit of the overlap on a slide-in is that cleaning is a cinch, as you dont have to stretch down to either side of the range to clean up food particles and spills. A freestanding model will have gaps on either side.

Although the Café ranks best for slide-ins, it still has the high-end features youd come to expect from this price range, including six individual burners, an edge-to-edge cooktop that can accommodate pots and pans in different sizes, an integrated cast-iron griddle, and Wi-Fi capability.

Where You Will Have Issues

Yes, you can place a cooktop over a wall oven .

It’s harder when mixing brands. You have more flexibility in electric products because they are shallow with a flexible cord in the back. The electrical can be placed anywhere.

Not every induction fits, be careful when installing induction over wall ovens from different manufacturers.

Gas appliances are the most problematic because the gas pipe can limit your options. The gas valve location differs by brand.

We recommend staying with the same manufacturer. Usually a manufacturer will fit a cut out in the wall oven to accommodate the gas piping for their particular cooktop.

However, this is not a guarantee. In one of the comments, a homeowner is having issues with a BlueStar cooktop and wall oven.

When you mix brands the gas valve does not line up with the wall oven most of the time, so installation will be compromised.

Igniter Repair Step 5 Inspect The Ceramic Igniter & Burner & Burner Cap For Clogging Debris Or Damage

Usually a few clogged orifices will not prevent a burner from igniting but it will burn with an uneven flame or flame may be absent at a few orifices.

Also check the burner or burner cap notches or orifices for grease or debris clogging.

Use a toothbrush or a wooden toothpick to clean out gunk if necessary.

Watch out: Don’t use a metal tool that can break, gouge, or enlarge the burner gaps or orifices.

Look at the igniter itself for cracks, chips, grease, soiling, other damage. If the ceramic igniter itself is actually cracked or damaged, it may be shorting to ground and unable to ignite the gas flame.

To clean the cruddy igniter above , I used liquid cleaner, a toothbrush, and a wooden toothpick, taking care not to damage the ceramic igniter.

Once the ceramic igniter itself is clean, look closely for dark lines indicating that the ceramic is cracked or chipped. In that case the ceramic igniter itself needs replacement.

On many cooktops, to inspect the entire ceramic igniter, you’ll need to remove the cast aluminum burner base – typically by unscrewing a center nut or by loosening a couple of screws that hold the burner in place. But on some cooktops the whole cooktop must be disassembled – don’t try that before turning off electricity and gas to the appliance.

Features And Functions You Should Have

We think the features that pack the most value for homeowners are the ones that boost convenience. Heres a list of best bets:

Lots of rack positions so you can create room in your oven for additional or tall items when needed. Most ranges have five but some lower-price ranges will not . Hot surface lights on electric stovetops will let you know if the burner area is too hot to touch. You wont find this feature on most coil-top electric ranges.Double ovens will allow you to cook multiple items at different temperatures. Keep in mind youll sacrifice the convenient storage drawer for the extra oven. A high heat burner is desirable for quickly heating up large quantities and for searing foods.Warming drawers keep cooked foods warm prior to serving.A self-cleaning cycle makes cleaning your oven less of a chore.Sabbath mode settings allow observant Jews to preprogram oven settings so cooked foods remain warm during the Sabbath when cooking is forbidden.

Question: Gas Igniters Just Won’t Stop Clicking

2016/08/02 LC said:

Hi, my stove top burners light perfectly BUT they wont stop clicking help!

Reply: common causes of & repair for gas igniters that won’t stop clicking

LC, If a gas flame igniter won’t stop clicking, the problem is almost always going to be one of the defects we list in the checklist below. I list these checkpoints in order of ease, leaving the most difficult and most costly until last.

If the gas flame does not ignite, start your diagnosis by reviewing our gas burner troubleshooting tips beginning

If the gas burner ignites and looks normal but the igniter won’t stop clicking then check the following:

  • Confirm that the gas burner cap is in place, not askew some igniters require sensing a proper flame and/or heat from it to stop clicking
  • Check for dirt, spilled food, water, around the burner igniter. These can cause a short circuit or they can prevent the igniter from properly sensing the presence of a good burner flame. There are photos of this problem earlier in this article.
  • Check for water or liquid spillage inside the burner, beneath the burner cap.
  • Check for a split, chipped, damaged igniter itself inspect the ceramic for fine cracks. This damage can be subtle. Often we just order new igniters and plug them in for all of the burners.
  • Watch out: make these checks with the gas off and surfaces cool enough that you can touch them without getting burned

Gas Vs Electric Range: Which Is Better

When your stove, or range, conks out, youre typically limited to replacing it with one that runs on the same fuel sourceeither electric or gas.

Only about half the homes in the U.S. have gas service available as an option the rest rely on electric. But as much as gas ranges are hyped in real estate listings and on cooking shows, they dont necessarily deliver cooking performance thats significantly better than electric.

And even if gas is an option for you, there are very good reasons to think twice before going with gasaside from contributing to climate change, recent studies, including this one from Stanford University, have found that methane leaks associated with gas stoves and cooktops may pose health risks, particularly without adequate ventilation.

If you could determine how well a range could cook from its fuel source, my job would be pretty boring, says Tara Casaregola, who oversees CRs range, wall oven, and cooktop lab. We see the greatest discrepancies between individual models, and you can find excellent choices in gas or electric.

    Reliability And Customer Service

Reliability and customer service are difficult to pin down. But heres the standard weve set for our picks: Owner reviews shouldnt reveal any clear, consistent pattern of widespread defects, design problems, or egregiously poor product support. For this reason, we favored slightly older and more-popular models because they tend to have a higher number of user ratings, so we know more about them.

We also took into account reliability data from J.D. Power and Yale Appliance. Neither source is comprehensive, however.

Over our years of reporting on appliances, weve also gathered feedback from repair technicians about the brands they think are the most reliable. But this is highly anecdotal and not especially consistent. So it doesnt weigh too heavily in our decisions, unless there seems to be a consensus about a brand or product.

    Build Quality And Design

    GE® 30" Built

The more finish options there are, the more flexibility you have in outfitting your kitchen. We gave a slight preference to stoves with at least three options, one of which should be stainless steel.

For the models we were able to check out in a store, we looked for ones with knobs that felt securely fastened to the front of the range, without too large a gap between the dial and the body. We checked for oven doors that opened smoothly but not too lightly, racks and drawers that glided, and a tightly laminated control panel. And we jiggled the grates to see how secure they were on the cooktop and how easy they were to remove for cleaning.

    Are Electric Stoves Safe

Electric stoves are considered safer than gas stoves because owners dont have to worry about gas leaks or issues with a gas line. But electric stoves can pose a danger as they cool down. Sometimes the coil on an electric range will not glow but remain hot as it cools or a smoothtop electric range can remain hot after its turned off.

Igniter Repair Step 6 Continue By Checking The Igniter Wiring Itself

If the igniter wire connection is loose or damaged that could be the problem. Check:

    • the wire connection at the bottom of the igniter
    • the wire connection at the other end – at the igniter control module

Check the igniter wire for nicks, shorts, or wetness along its entire length. We have seen recurrent problems with some stove-top gas igniters whose wires ran across the interior pan of the stovetop where they rested in water or cleaners used to clean that appliance.

The result was a shorted igniter wire and constant clicking that drove the homeowners crazy.

Igniter Repair Step 2 Is The Igniter Sparking And Clicking

Gas Cooktop Installation | Useful Knowledge

If you don’t hear clicking or a snapping sound and if you do NOT see a spark then the igniter module could be shot or an igniter wire may have become disconnected.

Watch out: just to avoid embarrassment, if you’re unsure about whether or not your cooktop uses electronic ignition at the burners, check the manual for your gas cooktop or range: does it use a continuous or always-on gas pilot light?

If so, your cooktop does not use an electronic igniter and you should not be looking for a sparking or clicking sound. But if your burners won’t light, the pilot light could be out.

If none of the igniters spark, check for a power failure. Check that the appliance is plugged in and that its circuit breaker or fuse is on or intact.

If there is electrical power to the stove or cooktop but no igniters spark or click, the igniter module may need replacement. In my experience, replacing an igniter module should be the very last thing you try, because 90% of the time the igniter problem is instead one of those listed in these 7 steps. Usually if the igniter module is bad then none of the igniters will spark or all will spark only weakly.

Less common is weak sparking at one or all igniters. A weak spark may be due to water on the igniter, wet wiring, a cracked damaged igniter or on occasion a failing igniter module.

Watch out: GE includes this safety warning:

Igniter switches, igniters, and wires are all replaceable parts.

    Electric Ovens Offer Consistent Heat

Heres what happens. When you are baking your dish at, say, 400-degrees, an electric oven will remain right around the 400-degree temperature. With a gas oven, things are a slightly different story. See, with gas, the heat comes from the flame. As your oven gets too hot, the flame will have to go out. Then, as the temperature drops, the flame must re-light and begin heating the oven. This entire process leads to a great amount of fluctuation in temperatures which can, ultimately, affect the outcome of your baking.

    Who Should Get This

In this guide, we focus on gas-powered stoves that are 30 inches wide, since this is the most common size in the US. All of our picks are freestanding ranges, which have finished sides and a backguard and arent as expensive as other types of stoves. Freestanding ranges arent considered to be as upscale as slide-in ranges, which have front-mounted controls and no backguard and usually sit flush with your counters. But freestanding ranges provide more flexibility with installation.

If youre looking at all of your options, we have guides to slide-in gas ranges, slide-in electric ranges, freestanding electric ranges, high-end or pro ranges, wall ovens, and countertop induction burners.
