Why Is My Ge Oven Not Heating Up Properly
Whether its too hot or not hot enough, an oven that doesnt heat up like it should can ruin any meal. Why wont my GE oven heat up correctly? It may need to be recalibrated to more accurately reflect the set temperature. Use these troubleshooting tips to solve the problem when you find your GE oven not heating properly.
What Would Cause A Gas Oven To Not Heat Up
Youve set your gas oven to pre-heat at 350 degrees Fahrenheit while you carefully align the final sheet of your much-complimented layer cake. You place the cake in the oven and start cleaning up the cake batter and frosting from the kitchen counter. After a quick chat with a friend, you turn the oven light on to see if the cake is rising. Its not. Opening the oven door, you realize the temperature in the oven has not risen above the temperature in the kitchen. Why wont the oven heat up? To understand that, you should probably understand how a gas oven works.

Blown Oven Thermal Fuse
A thermal fuse is a safety device that blows if the oven is in danger of overheating, preventing damage to other oven components. A GE oven not heating up properly or a lengthy self-cleaning cycle can result in high temperatures that cause the fuse to blow. It may also blow if its defective.
Multimeter testing of the fuse can confirm that its blown with a lack of continuity. A blown fuse cant be repaired and must be replaced for the oven to function.
*Note: An oven thermal fuse will rarely blow for no good reason. Chances are that a blown fuse is due to another problem with the oven. We recommend service from an oven repair specialist who can identify the root cause and help you avoid yet another blown fuse.
The Thermostat Or Selector Switch Is Burnt Out
If your oven still isnt heating, you should check the thermostat and selector switch.
The selector switch is on the face of your oven and is what changes your settings, such as bake or broiler.
Your thermostat is responsible for controlling the temperature in your oven. If it is burnt out or faulty, then it will cause issues with the temperature.
Before you start, pull the oven out from the wall and ensure the gas is turned off.
Use a multimeter to detect if there is continuity.
Depending on your oven type, the thermostat may be located behind the back panel, beneath the backsplash, below the control panel, or under the exhaust hood.
The thermostat is a thin piece of metal that is usually attached to a coil of wire.
Once you have located it, remove the thermostat so you can test it.
Once you have ensured the multimeter is calibrated and turned to the lowest ohm rating, you can put the multimeter on the thermostat. The reading should be zero or as close to zero as possible. That indicated the thermostat is working fine and therefore not the issue. If it has no reading at all, it indicates your oven thermostat is faulty and will need replacing.

The Oven Wont Heat To The Right Temperature
An oven not heating evenly could indicate a problem with the temperature sensor or the heating element. Follow these steps to check the temperature sensor:
Make sure that the sensor is not touching the inside wall of the oven.
Use an ohmmeter to ensure the sensor is functional. The resistance should rise as the temperature of the oven increases. If the ohmmeter shows that the sensor is not working, replace it.
If your gas oven is still not heating after checking or replacing the temperature sensor, you may have a problem with the gas igniter. If thats the case, follow the steps in The Oven is Not Heating.
Once everything has been checked or replaced, recalibrate the oven.
Heat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Check the temperature inside the oven with an oven thermometer after 20 minutes. Continue checking the temperature every 20 minutes for the next 90 minutes to two hours.
Add up the sum of the temperature readings and divide by the number of readings you took to get the average temperature of the oven.
Adjust the ovens temperature dial accordingly.
One Or Both Elements Dont Produce Heat
It seems like an obvious problem, but anyone can get in a hurry and not realize that one of the heating elements in your oven is not igniting. If your food isnt turning out as expected, check to be sure that both your broil and bake elements actually heat up when you turn on the oven.
If your broiler and burners are working, but your oven isnt heating up, you might have a faulty igniter, which is the most common reason ovens fail. When this happens, you may hear a clicking sound as the oven attempts to light. After a few clicks, if the igniter isnt working properly, you might smell natural gas as it escapes, at which point you should turn off the oven and contact an appliance repair company.
Older ovens typically have heat resistance igniters that need to be replaced or repaired, which newer models have spark igniters. If your problem isnt with your igniter, you may need to replace your stoves main valve or check for bad wiring, loose electrical connections or bad relays.

Possible Cause: Electrical Component Failure
Ovens have various components such as relays, and digital selectors that may stop working. Unfortunately, the only way to test these parts is with a multimeter. If other troubleshooting steps have been exhausted, it is best to contact a professional appliance repair service for additional diagnostics.
Ge Oven Element Failure

Is your electric oven not heating properly? It may have a defective heating element. These metal coils at the top and bottom of the oven provide heat when they receive electrical current. When operating properly, the coils will glow bright red and produce a steady, even heat.
Signs of a defective GE oven element include:
- Blistering or breakage
- An uneven red glow
A defective heating element cant be repaired and must be replaced. In some cases, the heating element can suffer damage after exposure to the high temperatures of the ovens self-cleaning cycle. Our oven cleaning tips recommend cleaning with a vinegar solution to prevent damage to multiple components.

How To Fix An Oven Gas Supply Issue
If you suspect your oven gas supply valve is turned off , locate the gas valve and turn it back on. The gas valve handle should be parallel to the gas line when turned on and perpendicular to the gas line when turned off.
If the gas supply valve is turned on but you suspect a gas supply issue, your home gas line may not be receiving gas. In this case, do not try to perform any trial-and-error troubleshooting fixes for gas supply issues. Contact your gas supplier or hire a repairman to remedy the problem.
If there are no issues with the electricity or gas supply, your gas oven may have problems with one or more of the components Ill talk about in the next sections.
Check The Burner Heads
The next step is to check the burner heads. The heads also help to ensure the flame is evenly spread so you can cook your food at an even heat. On the heads, you can see little holes that gas comes out of, which ignites and turns into an even flame. Sometimes those holes get clogged, which stops the flame from spreading correctly, resulting in your stove not getting hot enough.
Heres how to check the burner heads:
1. If you havent already, ignite the flame for the affected burner. Check if the flame is evenly spread or if its higher on one particular side.
2. If the flame isnt evenly spread, remove the cap and check the holes on the head for any signs of a blockage. If the flame is evenly spread, move on to the next step.
3. If you find any blockages, remove the debris blocking the holes with a soft brush. If that doesnt dislodge the blockage, you may need to wash them in hot soapy water.
4. Once the debris is cleared, test if the flame ignites evenly on the burner. If not, move on to the next step.
5. Repeat this process for each affected burner.

Oven Thermostat Needs Calibration

Is your Samsung oven not heating up enough to reach the desired temperature? It may need to be recalibrated. Though you may set the ovens temperature to a specific setting, the actual interior temperature can fluctuate. The ovens thermostat usually works to maintain the set temperature, but it may require recalibration to improve its accuracy.
Try testing your oven by baking a batch of plain biscuits. Follow the cooking instructions carefully and then look closely at the results. If your biscuits come out uneven or undercooked, you may need to recalibrate the oven thermostat.
Refer to your ovens user manual for the exact instructions on how to recalibrate your model oven. Selecting Thermostat Adjustment from the Settings or Options menu typically begins the process. Most ovens can be recalibrated up to 35 for improved accuracy.

Oven Needs To Be Calibrated
If your oven is not operating at the correct temperature , it could be the case that each component part is working properly but calibration is required. Depending on your model, you may be able to carry out the calibration yourselfusually by turning an adjustment screw underneath the control knobs for manual ranges. For ovens with electronic controls, try pressing the BAKE and BROIL buttons at the same time for 2 seconds until the display shows SF. Pressing BAKE again, then the + or key allows the oven to be adjusted by up to 35° F each way. Press START to save the adjustment. Again, an oven thermometer can help you determine if your oven is routinely below or above the set temperature.
