How Much Energy Does A Gas Oven Use
To calculate the operating cost of your gas stove and oven, we take the energy rating of the oven in Btu and divide it by 100,000. Multiply the result by the cost per therm of natural gas in your state, which varies greatly, then multiply by the number of hours the oven is used. You should be able to find the energy rating of your oven online if you know the model name or number. It is likely somewhere on the unit itself. If you still have the owner’s manual, you can find the energy rating there, measured in Btu.
To calculate the operating cost of an 18,000-Btu oven, you’ll divide 18,000 by 100,000, giving you 0.18. We’ll also need to find the average price per therm of natural gas in your state. This chart has the most recent prices via the US Energy Information Administration. Note that this chart is listed in dollars per thousand cubic feet, so you’ll need to divide by 10. For instance, if the chart price is $23, you’ll use $2.30 to calculate the cost.
In New York where I live, the price is currently $2.20 per therm . Next, we’ll multiply that price for a therm by the number you calculated in the last step to get the operating cost per hour of using your gas oven.
For me, it would cost about 40 cents per hour to run an 18,000-Btu oven. If I were to run an oven for 1 hour per day, it would cost $146 per year. In some states , natural gas is about 30% higher than the national average. In Hawaii, it’s more than double.

The Best Reason To Buy An Air Fryer Isn’t Even The Savings
An air fryer won’t cook everything better than your oven, but there are some air fryer foods that a big oven can’t touch. Because air fryers cook so fast and at high temps, foods like chicken wings, french fries and most frozen apps will get crispy on the outside without drying out on the inside the way they might when stuck in the large oven for 30 or 40 minutes.
As mentioned, air fryers don’t require any preheating time either. Most of the models I’ve used are also extremely simple to operate, safe even for children to use and easy to clean.
The Instant Pot air fryer lid turned out some excellent fried chicken in about 20 minutes. Can your big oven do that?

What Can You Cook
Air fryers can cook practically anything, though there are some limits. While you can cook entire chickens with delicious, juicy results, their smaller overall size can be problematic if, for example, you wanted to cook up a giant platter of crispy wings.
Thats because items ideally need to be spread across the bottom of the basket in a single layer for even results. Due to their smaller footprint compared to ovens, this means wings and other items need to be cooked in batches, which might be inconvenient depending on how many hungry mouths you have to feed.
How Do They Work
Most ovens have two heating elements one at the top and bottom that heat up the internal air, which in turn cooks the food. Convection or fan ovens also have a fan at the back or side, to help circulate this hot air for a more intense effect. This is why fan ovens normally have lower cooking temperatures, and why delicate operations like baking are best done with the fan turned off our guide to oven settings explains more.
Air fryers, in essence, are smaller, more intense convection ovens, circulating hot air heated by a heating element in a much smaller space. This heating element is at the top, above the food, with a powerful fan situated directly beneath it. This combination in a smaller space results in more intense heat cooking it faster than larger, traditional ovens. You also get crispier results in an air fryer than in an oven, making them ideal for cooking chips and other foods where you want a crunch.

Although it has room for only one rack at a time, the Nuwave Bravo XL boasts a fairly large capacity.
Plus, the oven comes with a built-in temperature probe to help ensure that your food is fully cooked.
The Bravo XL also has a variety of functions, including a yogurt-making setting. My colleague, Laura Flynn Endres of Get Fit Done, says that the Nuwave Bravo has earned its counter space in her kitchen because of all the different functions it offers in addition to air frying.
Cost Of Oven Versus Air Fryer
So how did we get these numbers? The easiest way to figure out how much an air fryer might save you versus a big oven was to calculate the wattage pulled per hour versus how much an electric stove would use. The same goes for a gas oven, although for that you need to figure out the amount of natural gas used for a stove as well as the cost of natural gas in your state.
Don’t worry. We did the hard part.

Air Fryers Don’t Need To Preheat Either
Don’t forget most air fryers also don’t require any preheating time, making them even more efficient. The average full-size oven takes at least 10 minutes to preheat but usually more like 12 to 15 minutes. Preheating requires as much energy as actual cooking. In the chart above, I added a modest 10 minutes to each of the oven cooking times to account for preheating.
If you consider that an air fryer does the work of an oven in half the time , 300 hours of cooking in a standard oven over the course of a year would likely take fewer than 150 hours when done in an air fryer.

I keep seeing how popular air fryers are and how they are so much cheaper than electric ovens. But is that also true if you have a gas oven?
Cynderella · 02/10/2022 23:13
I think not. I have a gas oven and I use it when I can fill it. But I have an air fryer too because we are a four adult household, all at home, but on different shifts, so eating at different times. Husband doesn’t work, so he’s on cooking Mon-Fri and he likes the convenience of air fryer. Summer holidays when I wasn’t working, we hardly used it.Term time, I batch cook at the weekend and freeze individual portions. So, we’ll use the air fryer Mon-Fri to cook lasagne or fish cakes because they’re ready in 15 mins and it takes that long for the oven to preheat. Or if son #2 is home, and he doesn’t want lasagne or is out, he’ll put some burgers and chips in when he gets home.Weekends, I cook, and we’re all eating about 6pm, so I’ll use the oven to cook something like pizzas or a pie, but I’ll also make some rolls, cookies, a cake or whatever for the week.

Exploring Air Fry Features In Ranges
You can certainly cook up bountiful gourmet feasts on a sleek built-in or slide-in range, but what if youre looking for something more? Kitchen ranges come in a wide selection of brands, styles, configurations, and fuel types, but since you asked, ranges can do a lot more than bake a casserole or the occasional tray of cookies. Our selection of ranges from Frigidaire and LG offer new cooking features such as Air Fry to provide healthy, fried cuisine from your home.
To put it simply, Air Fry can now be part of your range. No different than you would change your ovens settings from traditional baking to convection baking, you can switch the setting over to Air Fry, which is specifically made for frying up all of your favorite foods in far less time than a traditional deep fryer. Forget dealing with messy hot oil, pools of grease, or splash burnsan Air Fry oven range is an easier and healthier alternative to discover delectable fried recipes.
Which One Is Faster
Due to the way they work, most air fryers should be set to around 20-30C cooler than regular ovens, with the overall cooking time reduced by about 20 per cent. This rough guide is based on reading things like packet instructions for regular fan ovens. If youre using a dedicated air fryer recipe , then theres no need to convert anything.
Its important to note that while air fryers are faster, youll need to open the drawer and shake up the basket contents at least once during a cook to ensure even, crisp results for every item. This means that you might find yourself babysitting food while it cooks instead of simply walking away and letting it do its thing.

Should I Buy An Air Fryer Range
Air fryer ranges equip your kitchen with the ability to cook all your favorite fried foods without the extra oils. The main difference between an air fryer range and a regular air fryer is that a range model doesnt take up extra room on your countertop. Air fryer ranges also produce less noise, cook for the entire family, and dont have extensive preheat times.

While the differences between a gas vs electric air fryer range are slim to none, there are a few to point out. Of course, a gas range with an air fryer uses gas to heat your food while an electric range with an air fryer uses electricity. Both ovens use convection fans to circulate heat rapidly around your food for an evenly cooked meal. The decision between a gas vs electric range with an air fryer really comes down to what your home provides you with.
