What Is Sabbath Mode Why Is It Called Sabbath Mode
Many of us are wondering what it is? Is Sabbath more literally means the Sabbath and why?
Via: newseveryday.com
Sabbath more or also known as Shabbat mode is a feature of modern appliances like refrigerators and ovens which allow the Jews who adheres to their traditional law and observes Sabbath holidays. The religious law of traditional Jews distinguishes secular and holy periods of time. The holy times are the annual holidays and the weekly Sabbath.
Sabbath mode usually overrides the appliances normal operation and makes it comply with the rules of Jewish law or Halakha. Why? Halakha prohibits Jews from doing activities during those holy times, including the making of fire, preparation of food or switching electric button.

Because we live in a digital age and almost everything is possible, a solution was made for those Jews who need to use appliances and electricity on Sabbath holidays. Thats why a feature on the oven and some refrigerator are added and it is called Sabbath Mode.

What Is Sabbath Mode

Cooking is forbidden on the Sabbath and other Jewish holidays, so to allow for warm dishes to be served on these days, Sabbath mode ovens were created.
Halakha law or Jewish law does permit you to prepare the food ahead of time and keep it warmed until you are ready to enjoy the meal, so in effect, you turn the oven on before the holy time, cook the food before the holy time, and turn the oven off after the holy time.

Feature/just In Time For Passover
FEATURE/Just in Time for Passover – GE Cooking Products With Sabbath Mode Feature and a Delicious Dish From a Sophisticated Kosher Restaurant LOUISVILLE, Ky.—-Feb. 21, 2002–GE Appliances now offers a Sabbath Mode feature on a variety of wall ovens, smooth top electric slide-in and smooth top electric drop-in ranges to meet the needs of life in the kosher kitchen.
Chef Laura Frankel owns and serves as executive chef and manager of the critically acclaimed Shallots Restaurant, with locations in Chicago and New York City. Zagat’s 2001 restaurant survey says Shallots NY is easily the city’s most stylish, sophisticated kosher venue. GE Appliances and Frankel team up to offer consumers, of all religions, a delicious dish that can be prepared in a cooking product with a feature that adheres to the needs of the observant Jewish consumer.
This feature capability can be utilized, if desired, but otherwise it stays inactive and unnoticeable to the non-Jewish consumer. Most modern ranges are equipped with an integrated twelve- hour shut-off device. This shuts down the oven’s power after the oven has been operating consecutively for twelve hours. GE cooking products with Sabbath Mode will override the twelve-hour shut-off.
In addition to overriding the shut off, the Sabbath Mode feature will meet the observant Jewish consumer’s restrictions for observing the Sabbath and other holidays by:
— Eliminating tones or timer beeps.
— Not displaying icons.

How It Works On Refrigerators
A refrigerator that is in Sabbath mode will continue to run on a timed defrost in order to keep food fresh. Much like the oven, there will be no control panel display, no sounds, the ice and water dispenser will be disabled, and the interior lights will not activate when the door is opened. If the unit experiences a power outage while in Sabbath mode, the refrigerator will resume in Sabbath mode once power returns. The functionality of Sabbath mode on a refrigerator is far less complex than it is on an oven. The following refrigerator models are some that have sabbath mode capabilities: Bosch B36CT80SNS and LG LFXC22526S

Why Whirlpool And Ge Make Sabbath Mode Appliances
Let there be light might be an important part of the Old Testament, but for Orthodox Jews, it can be a burden on the Sabbath.
The traditional day of rest, which starts at sundown on Friday and ends at sundown on Saturday, forbids any work, including turning on lights, ovens, blenders, whathaveyou. Thats why dozens of major appliance brands like KitchenAid, GE, LG, and Whirlpool consult with Jonah Ottensoser at kosher-certification company Star-K to offer appliances with something called Sabbath Mode.

The Sabbath Mode On Ovens Fridges And More
The Sabbath mode on kitchen appliances is made for days of purposeful rest.
In recent years, the Sabbath mode is becoming more prevalent on kitchen appliances like ovens, refrigerators, wine coolers, and dishwashers. The idea first came to Whirlpool in 1997 and has since expanded to GE, LG, and other brands. This appliance setting has Jewish celebrations and the Shabbat in mind. Even if you do not practice the religious law, the Sabbath mode on ovens, fridges, and more can be beneficial if you honor a Sabbath day or want a day of purposeful rest.

The Ou Kosher Certified Shabbos Keeper And Ge Shabbos Mode

Shabbos mode which exists with many oven appliances only makes certain changes to the oven function. It does turn off the led readout and it does turn off the the light, the oven light, which is activated when you open and close the door. It does not have an auto shut off.
Most ovens will shut off after a number of hours of use perhaps 12 hours. In Shabbos mode, that is deactivated so that the oven will continue to run through a Shabbos or through a Yomtov. In addition to that sometimes it does create certain delays in the way the oven functions the introduction of the GE Shabbos keeper for ovens represents a significant upgrade to the existing shabbos mode and ovens both in terms of Shabbos observance without compromise and convenience.
Consumers one can take out food on shabbos leave food inside and come back and retrieve additional food as one goes through his meal one goes through courses from the night time into the daytime one can come back multiple times to the oven without any questions and that that is a really a problem for the Shabbos mode that exists otherwise.
The most important thing is the flames which is an actual fire very serious concern for shabbos is being automated on both levels the auto shutoff that is happening when you open or close the door its being deactivated so when you open or close the door nothing is actually happening.

Explanation Of The Sabbath Mode Feature
Observing the Sabbath and religious holidays in Judaism requires a restriction on certain activities during holy times. Jewish religious laws can affect how an appliance is used. For example, you can’t turn the oven on or off during this time. GE Appliances has worked with third party kosher certification agencies, like OU , to develop Sabbath Mode features for many of our appliances.
Models with Sabbath Mode features have directions in the Owner’s Manual about activating and using this feature. Check the individual model’s Owner’s Manual for more specific information.
Cooking Products:
When the Sabbath Mode feature is activated, the oven will no longer turn off automatically after 12 hours. Also, the control display won’t show the time, temperature, etc. until you deactivate the Sabbath Mode.
For enhanced features to make your range even more Shabbos compliant, consider the Shabbos Keeper for Ovens. It is an easy-to-install device that automatically sets your compatible gas or electric Freestanding or Slide-in range to Shabbos Mode each week. It then sets it back to the weekday mode after Shabbos and Yom Tov. For more information about the Shabbos Keeper for Ovens and compatible models, take a look at: Range – Shabbos Keeper.

Can Food Go Into My Warming Drawer On Shabbos
Quick answer: no. No food can go into your oven or warming drawer during Shabbos. However, what about the food thats already in your warming drawer?
According to Star-K, if your warming drawer is the type of model that doesnt have any technology besides an indicator that tells you when power is going to the drawer, the setting can be adjusted on Yom Tov but not on the Sabbath.
If your warming drawer doesnt have a simple design, then play it safe and do not use it.
How To Turn Sabbath Mode Off On A Maytag Oven

However, if your Maytag doesnt have a touchscreen, turning off Sabbath Mode is still pretty easy if your Maytag doesnt have a touchscreen. Just press the Cancel pad on your oven, and Sabbath Mode will turn off.
