Reliability And Customer Service
Reliability and customer service are difficult to pin down. But heres the standard weve set for our picks: Owner reviews shouldnt reveal any clear, consistent pattern of widespread defects, design problems, or egregiously poor product support. For this reason, we favored slightly older and more-popular models because they tend to have a higher number of user ratings, so we know more about them.
We also took into account reliability data from J.D. Power and Yale Appliance. Neither source is comprehensive, however.
Over our years of reporting on appliances, weve also gathered feedback from repair technicians about the brands they think are the most reliable. But this is highly anecdotal and not especially consistent. So it doesnt weigh too heavily in our decisions, unless there seems to be a consensus about a brand or product.

Build Quality And Design
The more finish options there are, the more flexibility you have in outfitting your kitchen. We gave a slight preference to stoves with at least three options, one of which should be stainless steel.
For the models we were able to check out in a store, we looked for ones with knobs that felt securely fastened to the front of the range, without too large a gap between the dial and the body. We checked for oven doors that opened smoothly but not too lightly, racks and drawers that glided, and a tightly laminated control panel. And we jiggled the grates to see how secure they were on the cooktop and how easy they were to remove for cleaning.

What We Love: Flexible rack placement, compact
What We Dont Love: No smart technology
If you prefer to cook with gas, opt for the Frigidaire 24-Inch Single Gas Wall Oven. This oven is well-designed with five different levels for the two included racks.
The boiler has both high and low heat options for those who like to make broiled dishes, while bakers will like its even bake feature. Digital controls make it easy to choose the precise temperature you want and can be wiped down should things get messy. Better yet, this oven self cleans in just two hours.
While this is a great appliance, it doesn’t offer convection cooking or smart technology. You can choose from three finishes: stainless steel, white, and black.

A Cheaper Gas Range: Whirlpool Wfg320m0b
*At the time of publishing, the price was $827.
Our favorite budget-friendly gas range is the Whirlpool WFG320M0B, which has better specs and owner ratings than competing stoves in its price range. The cooktop is surprisingly versatile, with a sensible burner layout and continuous cast iron grates, and the oven is larger than average. On the downside, theres no convection mode or self-cleaning option, there are only four burners, and the broiler is located in the drawer beneath the oven. But those are all typical for a stove at this price.
The Whirlpool WFG320M0B has two 15,000 Btu power burners that are strong enough to boil a gallon of water in maybe 10 to 12 minutes . Its almost unheard of for a stove that costs so little to have such strong burners, and theyre both situated at the front of the cooktop. The WFG320M0B also has a 5,000 Btu simmer burner and 9,500 Btu burner in the back row. All of these are located beneath a set of dishwasher-safe continuous cast-iron grates, whereas most competing models at this price have independent steel grates, which arent as functional or attractive.
The Whirlpool WFG320M0B comes with three finish options: black , white , and stainless steel , which sometimes costs an extra $50.
Why You Should Trust Us
Wirecutters Tyler Wells Lynch, co-author of the guide to high-end ranges, undertook initial research and testing for this guide in 2018. His research included the following:
- Tyler tracked down as much industry sales and trends data as possible from the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers, Trakline, Yale Appliance, and J.D. Power.
- He interviewed repair technicians from Maine and Las Vegas, as well as both the CEO and the resident chef of an appliance store in Boston.
- He spoke with product engineers from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, as well as with product representatives from the likes of Whirlpool and Gaggenau, among others.
- Tyler spent time at showrooms to get a feel for the build and sturdiness of some of the most promising models.
- He read through hundreds of owner reviews and reader comments to identify any reliability problems or real-world quirks.
In 2022, senior staff writer Rachel Wharton completed a new round of research for this guide. She evaluated those picks that had been redesigned. She updated our discussion on evolving features, such as air-fry modes, convection, and Wi-Fienabled smart cooking apps. And she added information about the Inflation Reduction Act and other federal and state laws and programs that are encouraging people to switch from gas ranges to electric ones.
To be clear, we have not performed our own hands-on cooking and testing. However, it will play more of a role in future guides to ranges and stoves.

With a 1.7-cubic-foot upper oven and a 4.7-cubic-foot lower one, the infrared heating function means you can cook faster since neither oven needs to preheat. There’s also a reservoir for steam cooking for when you need moisture in the oven, like for crème brûlée cheesecake. The upper oven has TurboCook, which can cook food 2 to 4 times faster, which might replace your microwave.
Besides Google Assistant and Alexa, the smart technology means monitoring your oven from the other room plus two different cooking apps to help you figure out what to make for dinner. Finally, this comes in two colors: stainless steel and black stainless steel.

Who Should Get This
In this guide, we focus on gas-powered stoves that are 30 inches wide, since this is the most common size in the US. All of our picks are freestanding ranges, which have finished sides and a backguard and arent as expensive as other types of stoves. Freestanding ranges arent considered to be as upscale as slide-in ranges, which have front-mounted controls and no backguard and usually sit flush with your counters. But freestanding ranges provide more flexibility with installation.
If youre looking at all of your options, we have guides to slide-in gas ranges, slide-in electric ranges, freestanding electric ranges, high-end or pro ranges, wall ovens, and countertop induction burners.

What We Love: Convection cooking, gliding extension rack, self-cleaning
What We Dont Love: Not smart technology compatible, the touchpad is slightly dated looking
If youre looking for a solid wall oven, the KitchenAid 30-Inch Single Wall Oven with Even-Heat True Convection is an excellent choice.
This oven has lots of features that will appeal to home chefs starting with the Even-Heat technology, which assures no cold spots during preheating and that the convection heating reaches all racks evenly throughout the cooking cycle. Should You Switch From Gas To Electric
The short answer is yes, you should switch from gas to electricor at least strongly consider doing so. Beginning in 2023, the Inflation Reduction Act will provide some federal rebates and tax credits on costs associated with buying and installing an electric range, oven, or cooktop.
The act will make switching from gas to electric more affordable for many people. But if you have the option, there are other good reasons to consider an electric stove over a gas version. Gas stoves are increasingly shown to be potentially risky, even with ventilation, in part because they emit benzene and methane. Electric kitchen appliancesspecifically induction modelsare generally cooler and safer, according to Energy Star, the energy efficiency certification program run by the Environmental Protection Agency.
Our own research and testing shows that induction cooktops are much better and easier to cook on than traditional electric versions, and they are just as flexible to cook on as gasif not better, in some applications. We plan to test more induction cooktops very soon.
