Do You Have To Peel Asparagus

how to cook asparagus in the oven with butter

You dont have to peel asparagus. But, you do want to trim the end off of the asparagus stalk, as its very tough, woody, and inedible. You can either snap it off with your hands, cut it with a chefs knife or peel it with a vegetable peeler.

Some recipes call for peeling the asparagus if its part of a shaved salad or a topping of for pizza. Its a great option to switch up the cooking technique, but in this baked asparagus recipe, were not peeling it.

Check The Temperature Accurately

Ribeye roasts are thick, so its nearly impossible to tell if your roast is cooked enough in the middle by using your sight alone. Instead, rely on a meat thermometer to help. Insert the thermometers probe into the thickest part of the roast, leaving it in place for several seconds until the temperature reading remains constant. For medium-rare, the final temperature should reach 130-135 degrees. Remember: Your roast cooks more as it rests, so it may only reach 120-125 degrees right out of the oven. As long as its 130-135 degrees after resting, its cooked to medium rare.

Should I Cook The Ham The Night Before

Cooking the ham the night before can help reduce spoilage, as well as make it more tender. If you do not have a ham oven, you can place the ham in a large resealable plastic bag and seal it with duct tape.

Ham is a type of meat that can be overcooked, leading to a dry and flavorless product. While it is not always easy to know when ham is over cooked, there are several ways to tell if it has been overcooked. The first way is by the look of the product-Ham that has turned slightly brown or black in color usually indicates that it has been over cooked.

How To Season It & What To Put On It

Asparagus seasoning can vary based on your tastes, dietary concerns or what you are going to serve it with. I found the best seasoning for baked asparagus to be a sprinkle of grated Parmesan cheese, a clove of minced fresh garlic, and a squeeze of lemon juice.

  • Adding ¼ cup panko breadcrumbs before cooking
  • Sprinkling on ½ teaspoon garlic powder, onion powder, Italian seasoning or Herbs de Provence
  • Adding 1-2 pinches red pepper flakes
  • Finishing with balsamic vinegar or balsamic glaze
  • Squeezing on any citrus fruit lemon, lime, orange or grapefruit
  • Adding roughly chopped fresh parsley, mint or basil leaves after cooking
  • Replacing the olive oil with nutty and aromatic ghee
  • Finishing the spears with a tab of butter
  • My absolute favorite is garlic parmesan asparagus. Savory, cheesy and somewhat nutty.
  • A few other additions can include toasted slivered almonds, lemon zest, or any hard, grated cheese!

Ginger, soy, and sesame seeds are delicious ingredients to season the roasted asparagus with, or you could try wrapping the asparagus in bacon before it hits the oven. A touch of lemon juice or a sprinkle of any tender herbs after the asparagus comes out of the oven is another delicious way to finish the dish instead of adding almonds.

Do You Wash Asparagus Before Cooking

Yes, you should wash your asparagus before roasting or baking it, especially if you use store-bought asparagus. Cleaning vegetables under running water is always a good idea and a need for all vegetables. To avoid losing color and making it unusable, wash your asparagus only when you are sure that you will cook it. If you wash it and store it wet, it will become unusable.

How Long To Roast Asparagus At 425 Degrees

When making roasted asparagus the only difference in roasting is temperature and cooking time. Of course, roasting at higher temps cook the spears faster.

  • Narrow asparagus will have a cook time as low as 12 minutes, but more likely closer to 14-16 minutes.
  • Thick spears will cook in 15-18 minutes at 425 degrees.

The oven time will vary based on your doneness preference, actual thickness of the spears and accuracy of your oven thermostat. In general, you are looking for tender crisp spears that are mostly still green with just a tinge of brown.

If you love asparagus as much as we do try my Sauteed Asparagus with Mushrooms, Cheesy Baked Asparagus or Alton Brown’s suggestion and zap your salted spears in the microwave wrapped in wet paper towels for 3-4 minutes. Surprisingly this results in nicely cooked spears. I personally rarely steam asparagus, but it is a nice hack when you need a single side dish serving fast. As far as boiling is concerned… just don’t do it. It’s an affront to the vegetable.

Tip: Line the baking pan with parchment or aluminum foil for easy clean-up.

Do You Bake Asparagus Covered Or Uncovered

Parmesan Oven

Well, the perfect way to bake asparagus is to bake it uncovered to make it crispy and golden brown from the outside and tender from the inside, and the perfect temperature for that is 350°F. But if you want to make the asparagus tender to make certain recipes like asparagus soup or mashed asparagus, you should bake it covered with foil.

Yes, you can still bake uncovered for a higher temperature like 400 or 450°F but there high risk to burn the asparagus from the outside without cooking them.

How To Trim Asparagus

When youre ready to make your Parmesan Baked Asparagus, its time to really trim the ends. The ends of asparagus are chewy and woody, so they need to be trimmed before roasting.

If youhold a piece of asparagus and bend it, the asparagus will naturally snap wherethe tough end begins. Instead of snappingthe woody ends off of every piece of asparagus, I do this to only one piece, thenline the asparagus up on a cutting board and chop off all the ends at this samepoint. So, with just one snap and onelong slice, all the asparagus are trimmed!

How To Bake Asparagus

  • Preheat oven: Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F. We want a very hot oven to produce a very hot pan that caramelizes the natural sugars of the asparagus for that signature nutty roasted flavor.
  • Prepare baking sheet: You can bake your asparagus directly on the baking sheet or line it with foil for easy clean up. In either scenario, spray the surface with nonstick cooking spray. I do NOT recommend parchment paper because it does not promote caramelization.
  • Trim asparagus: trim as previously discussed, snapping off all of the tough, woody ends no one wants to bite into chewy asparagus that just doesnt chew!
  • Dry asparagus: Rinse and dry asparagus. This is the first time you are rinsing your asparagus. You never want to rinse it before storing. Dry the asparagus very well with a kitchen towel or salad spinner so the asparagus will caramelize and not steam.
  • Toss ingredients together: Add asparagus, olive oil, lemon juice and seasonings to the baking sheet and toss to evenly combine. I like to toss all the ingredients together on the baking sheet because then you only have one dish to clean up! I like to use my hands because I feel like it combines everything more evenly than a spatula, but feel free to use a spatula if thats more your thing.
  • Add Parmesan: Evenly sprinkle freshly grated Parmesan all over the asparagus. I focused the Parmesan more in the center for this recipe, but that was just for aesthetic reasons.
  • Bake: Bake asparagus for 7-10 minutes depending on size.

Yes you can freeze asparagus either before or after baking without losing any flavor, but it will be missing the firm texture. Thicker stems will hold up better, but still wont be as crisp. As the asparagus freezes, small ice crystals puncture the cell walls resulting in a somewhat mushy texture. This makes frozen asparagus ideal for adding to casseroles, sauces, quiche, and soups, but not so much for stand-alone adoration.

Theres not much you need to do with ribeye roast while it cooks to get excellent results. Instead, avoid opening the oven more than necessary to check on your roast. If you have one, use an in-oven thermometer to check the temperature without opening the oven door.

Some people like basting their roast a couple of times while cooking. This isnt necessary, but you can certainly do it if youd like. Use garlic butter or a small amount of olive oil to brush along the top of the roast 2-3 times as it cooks.

Finally, remember to cook the roast with the fat side up, as the fat renders down during cooking to absorb into the meat for flavor and tenderization.
