This will help to prevent the food from overcooking on the outside while still cooking through on the inside. Ingredients For Chicken Wings
Youll need the following ingredients for these chicken wings:
- 1 pound chicken wings If they arent cut into pieces when you buy them, you might have to remove the wing tip and detach the wing joint.
- Extra virgin olive oil I like the flavor that the olive oil adds to the chicken, however you can use any cooking oil you want. It just helps crisp up the skin. If you want to spray the chicken with oil, thats fine too, just make sure you coat them well to keep the skin from drying out.
- Paprika Use Spanish paprika if you have it. It gives a lovely color and nice sweet flavor. You could also use a smoked paprika if you like a smoky flavor.
- Salt and pepper we keep this recipe very simple so you can decide what sauce or seasoning you want to add once theyre cooked.

Helpful Air Frying Tips
- It may be easier to remove the frozen wings from the package if left to thaw for 30 minutes or so on the counter. You can also run the package under warm water for a quick thaw out.
- Dont overcrowd the basket. For the best crispy results, the wings shouldnt touch. Work in batches if needed.
- Dry wings with a paper towel before air frying, as this will remove any excess liquid that could prevent the skin from crisping.
- Dont forget to drain any liquid that has accumulated at the bottom of the air fry basket or tray after the first 10 minutes. If its left there, it will create steam that will work to steam your chicken rather than crisp it up.
- Every air fryer is different and cooks at various speeds. For the first time cooking any recipe, get to know your air fryer by constantly checking in on the food and monitoring the results. Your air fryer may need more or less time than mine.

Iruntek Mini Air Fryer Review
It is ideal for those looking for an air fryer that does not take up much space. The iRUNTEK Mini is just that, a mini. It measures only 11.4/118 inches in total height. There are only 13 1/4-quart baskets in this air fryer, and it has 800 watts of power. If youre looking for a fast-food air fryer that can cook large volumes of food quickly, the toaster oven is a better option. The Toaster oven is a better choice for cooking large items because it allows for a more controlled rate of cooking. There is no better machine in the world.
Options For Making The Best Crispy Chicken Wings
I knew the solution would be baked chicken wings. What I needed to find was a way to bake them such that they would come out just as crispy as deep-fried. I figured out how to bake amazingly flavorful and crispy enough chicken wings, I posted about it in my How to Bake Chicken Wings post, but they are not like deep-fried.
I experimented with different temperatures, convection, with and without oil, but couldnt get what I wanted. The solution was prompted by Serious Eats The Food Lab: In Search of the Best Oven-Fried Buffalo Wings article. Similar approach is used in the Cooks Country Oven-Fried Chicken Wings recipe.
What the recipes in the above links suggest is tossing wings in baking powder to help with browning and crisping up the skin. Then baking for 30 minutes at 250F, followed by 40 minutes at 400F. Using baking powder was genius. It really does help.
While I generally liked the results I had a couple of issues. One issue was that the wings would come out a tad too dry inside. Another issue was the crispness the wings werent quite as crispy as deep-fried. Finally, I could not stand the length of baking. Seriously, over an hour to bake a couple of dozen wings?

Fresh Or Frozen Wings Which Is Best
For this recipe, youll want to stick with FRESH chicken wings. Frozen wings will be holding on to too much moisture, which is basically the enemy of crispy wings.
If you can only find frozen wings, thats ok! Just make sure you let them fully defrost in your refrigerator and then use plenty of paper towels to squeeze out any excess moisture.
What Temperature Do You Air Fry In A Convection Oven
When it comes to air frying, convection ovens are the way to go. But what temperature should you use
Heres what you need to know:

So What Is An Air Fryer
An air fryer is a countertop appliance that in essence is a mini convection oven. Due to the smaller space, large heating element, and fast circulating air, it mimics the actions of a deep fryer but without the extra oil, calories, and clogged arteries to go along with it. The heat hits whatever you load the air fryer with high heat fast to get the outside super crispy before the inside dries out. Ive had my air fryer for more than 2 years and the more I use it the more I love it.
Not only is it great at making things from scratch like these chicken wings, potatoes, and steak bites, it is also great at reheating pizza, chicken nuggets, mozzarella sticks, and such. The air fryer does all that, without any preheating time and it doesnt heat up your kitchen as an oven would.
Now Lets Get Making Extra Crispy Wings
Pat your wings dry with a paper towel if theyre super wet or you had to thaw them from the freezer. It helps if the wings are close to room temperature so the air fryer doesnt lose too much heat when you get that far in the printable recipe card.
Place the wings into a large bowl.
Start by seasoning your fresh wings with whatever seasoning blend you like! My secret ingredient, every single time, is ranch powder.
You need to season your wings well and toss them about. Coating everything really well then let the wings sit for a few minutes, while you preheat your air fryer.
When your air fryer has preheated, layout the wings in a single layer on the air fryer basket.
Each type of air fryer uses a cooking time that is a bit different. But, youll want to start on a lower temperature first. This helps the chicken skin begin to render and when we crank up the temperature, it will crisp up perfectly!
Start the cooking process around 300-325 degrees f.
Air fryer temperatures usually ramp up to their heated temperature very quickly, and you dont usually need to preheat them. I like to preheat mine, mainly because I like to hear that sizzle sound when the chicken wings hit the basket!
If you dont preheat your air fryer oven, it will be just as yummy!
Since were not deep frying these chicken wings, we can walk away, and do something with our life. Yay!
Set the timer for 15 minutes, then give them a shimmy shake!

Flip The Chicken And Cook For An Additional 10 Minutes

With a convection ovens fan-based heating system, you may notice that it doesnt need much time for re-heating. This means that additional time is adjusted depending on how your pieces of chicken are cooking. Keep an eye on them as they cook from both sides to make sure they are evenly cooked throughout and do not overcook them remove them from heat when golden brown or when their internal temperature with a meat thermometer reads 165°F .

Crispy Convection Oven Wings
Most of the time I make wings either on a charcoal grill using the Vortex insert, on my Char-Broil Big Easy, in an air fryer, or I deep fry them. But sometimes none of those options are available. Thats when I fire up my convection oven. And you know, the wings are actually pretty darned good! Nothing will ever match deep frying wings in oil, but this is close enough when a deep fryer isnt available. These crispy convection oven wings satisfy my wing craving just fine, thank you!
When your crispy convection oven wings are done, dont make them sad by adding cold wing sauce right out of the fridge! That cold sauce will kill some of that crispiness that you had, and itll make your wings mighty darned cold! So if youre using leftover, refrigerated sauce, warm it up while the wings are cooking. Then sauce those little beauties right out of the oven!

Let The Chicken Rest For 10 Minutes
After the chicken has cooked to perfection in the convection oven, it is important to allow it to rest for at least 10 minutes before serving. This resting period will help lock in the flavorful juices, resulting in tender and juicy pieces of chicken. It is recommended that you cover the cooked chicken with aluminum foil and allow it to rest on a plate or cutting board. This helps keep the chicken warm until ready to serve.
Additionally, this time gives you an opportunity to use any leftover heat from the oven or convection heater to melt a great topping like butter or cheese onto your creation while enjoying some last minute preparation of your side dishes. Ensuring your side dishes are prepped ahead of time will guarantee that all your ingredients are hot when served and also saves precious time. Of course for those more daring chefs, feel free to experiment with different seasonings during this pre-serve waiting period thanks again for choosing air fried chicken!
