Making Delicious Tater Tots In The Oven
These really are quite simple. A microwave and food processor makes quick work of the whole process. Heres how we do it.
We start with peeled russet potatoes. After a rough chop, we dunk them in cold water for 10 to 15 seconds. This gets rid of some of the extra starch, which means our tots will be a little fluffier in the middle and not gummy. After the water, we add the potatoes to a food processor and pulse twenty or so times until they look like little bits of potatoes. Then we wring them out and get rid of as much excess water as we can.
On to the microwave most homemade tater tot recipes out there call for boiling or baking the potatoes before shaping. We were not into the extra time that required so we use the microwave.
A microwave makes quick work of cooking the chopped potatoes just 2 minutes. After 2 minutes of cooking in the microwave, the potatoes are cooked just enough to be tender, but still have a bit of crunch perfect for tots!
Its time for the rest of the ingredients. Salt, onion powder, pepper, cornstarch, parsley and cheese. Remember, you could go off the rails here. Bacon, basil, something spicy there are lots of options. Gently mix everything together the potatoes can be a bit sticky, so gentle is best. A rubber spatula works nicely as well as a fork.
Thats it. After about 20 minutes in a hot oven, youve got crispy, golden brown tater tots ready to be devoured by anyone in a 20-foot radius!

Bacon is a staple at our house, we don’t eat it every day or even every week, but at least a couple of times a month. I save my bacon drippings religiously.
Please don’t tell me that you are not in the habit of it. Throwing out bacon drippings is a terrible waste in my book! I simply pour the drippings into a big mason jar and keep it in the fridge.
What does bacon drippings have to do with tater tots? Well it’s the secret ingredient to these oven fried tater tots. They are sure to wow your tastebuds with flavor.
I just add the bacon drippings to a sheet pan and let it melt while the oven preheats. I toss the tater tots with the melted bacon drippings and then give it a sprinkle of season salt.
They bake – or oven fry at a high temperature. I flip them over about halfway through cooking. They come out so crunchy and so delicious.

Homemade Oven Roasted Tater Tots
January 18, 2014 By: Barb
Why have I waited so long to make homemade tater tots? Theyre SO much better than the frozen ones you buy at the store. I knew from the moment I was assembling them that this recipe would be a winner. These tater tots are perfectly fluffy on the inside and golden brown and crisp on the outside. Plus theyre healthier, baked and not fried with only a handful of ingredients: potatoes, olive oil, salt and pepper.
Russet or red skinned potatoes are great for this recipe but Im sure any variety will work fine. If you have a hard time making cylinder shapes, try mashing the grated potatoes a little. . And keep an eye on the tater tots while roasting so they dont burn. Give this recipe a try, I promise you will not be disappointed! Serve with ketchup of your favorite dipping sauce.

To make tater tots, all you would need to do is heat the oil until it reaches the proper temperature, then drop the tots into the oil for a few minutes, at most two minutes.
1. Using tongs, carefully lift the tater tots out of the oil and place them on a plate lined with a paper towel to soak up any leftover oil.
2. Avoid cramming too many tater tots into the deep fryer at the same time, as this can overcrowd the machine, lower the temperature of the oil, and prevent the tater tots from crisping up correctly.
3. While you are warming batches of tater tots in the deep fryer, keep the ones that have previously been reheated in the oven on a low heat setting until needed.

Make Your Next Batch Of Nachos With Tater Tots
Remember when you’d walk into your school cafeteria to the smell of tater tots and you knew it was going to be a great lunch? Those were the days. Alas, back then a golden tot didn’t need much more than a swift dip in ketchup to be the best thing you’ve eaten in your entire short life.
Fast-forward to now. You’re old. Tots still rule, sure, but they need more than ketchup to justify you waiting 30 minutes for them to brown in the oven. So allow us to present totchos: tater tot nachos.
Spread 1 bag of frozen tater tots onto a baking sheet or large skillet, and bake at 350° for 25 to 30 minutes. Prep the toppings while the tater tots are toasting. We went with a combination of chopped dried chorizo, a mix of shredded mozzarella and cheddar cheeses, pickled jalapeños, diced red onion, chunks of avocado and a sprinkle of cilantro. With nachos, you can’t go wrong with any combination of meat, cheese and vegetables, so feel free to change the flavors, amounts or toppings to your taste.
Once the tots are done baking, remove them from the oven and top with only the chorizo and cheese. Put the tots back into the oven and bake until the cheese has melted, 10 to 15 minutes.
Remove from the oven, add the rest of the toppings and dig in. Soon you’ll feel these magical totchos bestow upon you a youthful glow, aka tot-induced happiness.
