Price: On The High End But Worth Every Penny
Ranging in cost between about $150 for the 1-quart option to $560 for the 13 ¼-quart option, Le Creusets Dutch oven is much pricier than its competitors. The 5.5-quart pot we tested retails for $350 MSRPabout 6x the price of its main budget contender, the Lodge.
That said, in terms of longevity, versatility, and ease of use, theres no doubt youll get a substantial return on your investment. Can you make equally delicious meals in a less-expensive Dutch oven? Perhaps, yes. But if you look at this as an heirloom piece that could stay in your family for generations, it might be worth paying up.

What Are The Best Dutch Ovens Money Can Buy
Down to business. I have a Lodge, which I love, but there are plenty of great options out there at a variety of price points. You do absolutely need one, so choose the one that fits your budget. The best cast-iron Dutch oven doesnt have to cost $350but it sure can if you want it to. Here are our recommendations:
Into the idea of owning a piece of cookware thatll last for generations to come? Le Creusets iconic Dutch ovens are genuine heirloom pieces. Ive had mine for 10 years, my mom has had hers for 40, and I know folks using Le Creusets that have been passed down from grandparents. Theyre more lightweight than competitorswhich is key if youre in the market for a 13.25 quart Dutch oven to make enough soup for your soccer teamand come with that Le Creuset lifetime warranty . We use them in the Bon Appétit Test Kitchen. The downside is, of course, the pricewhich is partly due to the high quality and partly due to the fact that these things are still made in France, where the cost of labor is high. If you dont have a Dutch oven and a $350 pot is not in the cards, get yourself a Misen, Lodge, or Milo and upgrade when youre ready. Le Creusets are built to last, and no doubt when Im 80, Ill be using mine to stew prunes. MacKenzie Chung Fegan, senior commerce editor

Material: Functional But Fragile
Le Creuset introduced its first enameled cast iron cocotte in 1925, and it seems to have only gotten better with time. The improved enamel interior coating is designed to resist staining and dulling, which means you can do all kinds of cooking in it, from frying to braising to boiling. The interiors pretty cream color also makes it easier to monitor food and avoid burning while cooking. Some say its prone to staining after long-term use, but we didnt run into this after a few weeks of testing.
The Dutch oven is designed to be chip-resistant, however, cast iron and enamel are still relatively brittle and can chip or crack if not properly cared for. The thought of chipping a gorgeous $350+ pot makes us cringe, and its worth noting that Le Creusets lifetime warranty, though generous, doesnt cover damage from abuse…neglect, abnormal wear or tear, overheating, or any use not in accordance with the cookware instructions provided.” Basically, we suggest being gentle with the pot when cooking, cleaning, and storing.

Maybe The Best Part You Will Cook Things In It And Then Serve Those Things In It Straight From The Oven To The Table Because Its Pretty
Classically pretty, like puffy sleeves and brooches. Why get a separate platter dirty? Are you obsessed with doing dishes or something? I mayOR MAY NOTown a very specific pumpkin-shaped cocotte that I use approximately once a year, but for the entire months of October and November it decorates my mantle and doesnt rot into mush like real gourds. Put a kitten in it! Make a photoshoot of it.

Is Le Creuset Signature Better Than Classic
If youre in the market for a high-quality piece of cookware that will last, and the price is not a factor then the Le Creuset Signature is the way to go. The improved design plus the added features of versatility, durability, and safety make it worth the extra money upfront.
If youre looking for a value buy, then the Classic Le Creuset is still your best option. Its less expensive than its counterpart but still maintains the Le Creuset quality standard with superior enamel and incredible sturdiness.
Cleanup: Easy As Un Deux Trois
This Dutch oven is dishwasher safe, which we know will be a huge plus for some people. Because it is such a special and expensive piece, however, we opted to wash it by hand. Luckily, doing so was super easy. After gently scrubbing the Dutch oven with a warm, soapy sponge, it looked good as new in mere moments.

Le Creuset Enameled Signature Round Dutch Oven Review

A Dutch oven is a useful kitchen tool that can be used for everything including chicken roasting to bread baking. The Le Creuset Round Dutch Oven is one of the best dutch ovens weve found.
These solid cast-iron pots are great. You can do nearly any cooking chore in one. When you have a piece of meat braised low and long with stock, wine, or brandy, some truly magical things can happen.
A Dutch oven, sometimes known as a French oven, or a cocotte, is a heavy type of cookware best known for slow-cooking foods including beef stew, pulled pork, Bolognese sauce, and soup. When it comes to long and slow cooking processes like casseroles, stews, roasts, and especially braising, Dutch ovens excel.
The enameled cast iron from Le Creuset is their most well-known product. Their products are created in France and adhere to some of the finest manufacturing standards in the world.
Flaws But Not Dealbreakers
The bottom of the Lodge has a slightly curved surface compared with Le Creusets oven. Thats an asset when sautéing vegetables or caramelizing onions, but the Lodge required a few extra minutes to achieve the same level of sear on large cuts of meat, compared with other ovens with flatter surface areas. The base is an inch smaller than that on Le Creusets oven, so you have a little less room to brown meat if youre cooking in large batches.
Weve seen complaints from Amazon reviewers, our readers, and a few Wirecutter staff members that the Lodges enamel chips easily. We havent experienced any chipping ourselves, and Lodge told us that its warranty covers cracked or chipped enamel. But one Wirecutter writer with a damaged pot did not hear back from Lodges customer service. The Lodge is much more affordable than our upgrade pick, but it may also have a shorter lifespan. Price isnt always a tradeoff for quality, but in the case of Dutch ovens, it may be something to consider.

Performance: Top Of The Line
This was our first time cooking with a Dutch oven and Le Creuset pulled out all the promised stops in terms of versatility and ease of use. We loved having the option to use the Dutch oven on the stovetop or in the oven. Though the Dutch oven can only be heated up to 500°F due to its phenolic knob, we found that served most purposes. If you know youll regularly be cooking above 500°F, you can always purchase a $20 replacement gold or silver knob which is oven-safe at any degree.
At 5.5 quarts, we found the pot was quite spacious, affording us plenty of room for the 4-pound chicken we roasted in it. We put the whole thing in the oven and less than two hours later, voila, a moist, perfectly cooked chicken. We later threw the leftover carcass back in the pot and made stock which also turned out nicely.
In terms of longevity, versatility, and ease of use, theres no doubt youll get a substantial return on your investment.
Is Le Creuset Made In China
Not all Le Creuset products get made in France, but the brand manufactures all cast iron products at the original foundry in Northern France. Le Creuset makes its stainless steel products in Portugal, the stoneware comes from Thailand and the accessories come from China. Check out my article helping you identify Le Creuset Fakes!

The exquisite design and wide array of vibrant, nuanced color optionsfrom matte sugar pink and emerald green to coastal blue and cottonmake this pot an ideal display piece for your stovetop. On the other hand, if youve got plenty of room, it also comes in larger sizes like 7 ¼, 9, and 13 ¼ quarts.
Weighing 11 pounds, 4 ounces , the 5.5-quart pot is heavy but not unmanageably so. The Dutch oven can also be used for storing and serving food, easily transitioning from your stovetop to your table to your fridgeimpressing guests in the process.
