Wait For It To Cool Down

Self Cleaning LG Oven [BEFORE AFTER]

Your oven heats up to around 900°F during the self-cleaning cycle. After the cycle has finished, the lock will stay engaged until the oven has cooled down to a safe temperature. Since ovens are designed to keep heat in as efficiently as possible, this can take a while.

While it usually takes between 30 and 90 minutes for the lock to disengage, it can sometimes take longer. Try waiting another hour or two to see whether the lock disengages before you try anything else.

Use The Self Clean Cycle

Warning: Before starting Self Clean, make sure you review the warnings and safety precautions in the Self Clean warnings section.

The Self Clean cycle heats up the inside of your oven to a very high temperature which will burn away or dissolve food residue. It’s the best way to clean the oven’s interior, if you don’t want to use the regular soap and water method.

  • Before starting a Self Clean cycle, first remove everything from the oven, including the racks and any other oven accessories like a partition .

  • Then, clean up everything you can and all excess spillage. Self Clean should only be used for whatever is left over that you can’t clean away yourself.

Caution: Do not use oven cleaners to clean the oven. Commerical oven cleaners or oven liners should NEVER be used in or around any part of the oven. Residue from oven cleaners will damage the inside of the oven during a self-cleaning operation.

  • To start a Self Clean cycle, select Self Clean, and then select Start.

  • Selecting Self Clean multiple times before selecting Start will toggle through the duration options. The controls are a little different for models with knobs or a touchscreen. Please see your user manual for details.

  • If the Self Clean button will not work, there are a few possible reasons why . Find more information in our troubleshooting guide.

Clean Between The Glass On Your Oven Door

Important: Although door cleaning is not covered by warranty, if you take the door apart yourself any resulting damage may not be covered by any remaining warranty. If you are unable to clean it yourself, visit our Support Center to request out of warranty service to take the door apart for cleaning.

You will need a few things to clean between the glass panes. First, you’ll need something long, thin, and preferably flexible, like a yardstick or a clothes hanger. Next, wrap it in a cleaning cloth, and use tape or rubber bands to make sure the cloth cannot come loose. You can also invest in an oven cleaning tool.

You’ll also need an oven cleaner. You can buy something specific for this purpose, or simply mix baking soda and water to create a paste that’s great for removing greasy food residue. Apply the paste, and then wipe it off using white vinegar, which reacts with the baking soda to help it dissolve.

  • Remove the oven door using the instructions in your model’s user manual.

  • Look at the bottom of the door and find the gaps and grooves there. These give access to the space between the glass panes. Use your cleaning tool and cleaner to get inside and swipe around.

  • Some cleaners work best when allowed to sit for a bit before you clean them away.

  • Wipe up any remaining cleaner. Then, make sure everything is nice and dry.

  • Put the door back on your oven by reversing the steps you used to remove it.

How To Use A Self Cleaning Oven

A self-cleaning oven is one of the great innovations of modern times. The very first self-cleaning ovens were introduced in 1963 by Thermador and were welcomed as an incredible convenience.

If youve ever cleaned a dirty stove with a chemical cleaner, as I have many times, you would never buy an oven that doesnt have a self-cleaning function. My own home oven, where Ive roasted countless chickens, ducks, and legs of lamb, is of 1948 vintage, and cleaning it is the low point of my spring and fall spruce-ups. However, as director of a testing lab for decades, Ive tested more than my share of self-cleaning wall ovens.

Countless times Ive heard people say that they have a self-cleaning mode in their convection or conventional oven, but they never use it. Theyre afraid that it will smoke or set off the fire alarm. Often, they just dont know how to activate it and arent sufficiently motivated to pull out the manual to get the instructions.

Or, Ill hear folks say they say that their ovens never get dirty. My response to that is, Do you ever roast a chicken or broil a steak? Both of these foods spatter badly in the oven, leaving lots of greasy residue on the oven walls. Likewise, blueberry pies and saucy lasagnas drip onto the oven floor. Convection fans help distribute even temperature, but they also disperse the grease in the cavity.

    Set Self Cleaning Cycle

Never run the self cleaning cycle on your oven while not home. If you have excessive buildup on the bottom of the oven it will smoke. The heat is very intense in self cleaning ovens. The heat is designed to turn the debris, grease and dirt into ash. The average self cleaning cycle lasts about three hours. The oven temperature will be extremely hot. During summer time, you should run the self cleaning cycle late at night or early in the morning to avoid over taxing the air conditioner during the heat of day.

Can You Leave Oven Racks In The Oven When Self

For the best results, do not leave the oven racks inside the oven while the oven is self-cleaning. Simply, because the oven will heat to extremely high temperatures to clean the interior of the appliance. Those high temperatures will cause the racks to wrap and become misshapen.

Dangerous Smoke Odours And Carbon Monoxide

Failure to remove bigger pieces of food debris or liquid from your oven before running the self-cleaning feature can lead to excessive smoke and foul odours. In addition, those pieces may not break down into ashes but bake on even harder. Sugary foods and spills can create enough smoke to set off fire alarms or cause eye and breathing issues.

Worse yet, a study by the North Iowa Municipal Electric Cooperative Association discovered that carbon monoxide is produced when food residue is burned during the self-cleaning cycle. This poisonous gas is odourless, tasteless, and invisible. Carbon monoxide is responsible for thousands of injuries and deaths every year. You must open windows and run an exhaust fan to dissipate gas fumes during the cleaning process. Keep a working carbon monoxide detector in your home, as there is no way to eliminate carbon monoxide emissions when using this function.

How To Maintain A Clean Oven Between Self

Though self-cleaning is undoubtedly convenient, your best bet to keep your oven in good, working condition is to give it a little TLC in between more major cleaning sessions. If you really want to stay on top of things, wipe it down once a month or when it begins to look dirty, says Forte. Heres how:

  • Wipe up spills immediately: Use a damp sponge or brush to nab loose bits of food. To avoid burns and inadvertently shattering any untempered glass, always wait until the oven is completely cool to wipe down glass, walls, and racks.
  • Clean racks: Remove the racks from your oven for more effective and comfortable cleaning. Then, wash each rack one at a time in warm, sudsy water or a quality oven cleaner. Rinse, let dry, and slide back into place.
  • Clean the door: Clean the outside of your oven the same way you would the interior with warm, sudsy water and a sponge. For streak and spot-free glass, use a glass or grease-cutting multi-purpose cleaner like Simple Green All-Purpose Cleaner, then scrub with a scrubbing pad, rinse with a clean cloth or sponge, and let dry.

Cleaning Options For Your Gas Electric Or Dual Fuel Range

Despite our best efforts, all of us have experienced an inevitable spill-over in the oven at one point or another. Whether it’s cheese melting off your pizza, or a cobbler oozing over the baking dish, spills inside the oven leave a mess! When shopping for a new range, it’s important to understand the options that are available for cleaning. Here are a few of the cleaning options available in GE ranges.

    Self-Clean Ovens

The self-clean cycle is a time-saving convenience feature. The oven is cleaned by heat, at temperatures above normal cooking temperatures. During the cleaning cycle the oven is heated to about 880 degrees Fahrenheit . At this temperature, food soils inside the oven decompose, leaving behind a small amount of ash. The leftover ash is similar to cigarette ashes, and wipes out easily with a wet cloth.

The cycle takes from one and a half hours to three hours, depending upon the amount of soil. A slight odor may be detected the first few times the oven is cleaned. No commercial oven cleaner or oven liner of any kind should be used in or around any part the of the self-clean oven. Do not use pieces of aluminum foil to catch spillovers. Depending on your oven model, the pans and racks may need to be removed. As a general rule, you may leave self clean racks in your oven, but you must remove stainless steel racks.
