Entertaining Is A Breeze With 16

How To Cook With Ooni Koda 16 Pizza Oven | Essentials

The most important part of the 16 Koda is obviously the size. Ive owned the Koda 12 for a little over a year now and although its still a fantastic oven, it only makes mini pizzas. While I love mini pizzas, two things are mathematically constant a larger percentage of total pizza area is lost to crust on an 11-inch pie than a 16-inch one, and you get more total pizza surface area from one 16-in pizza than two 11-in pizzas.

In practice, this means to feed four people I’d need to cook 4+ mini 11-inch pizzas in one go with the Koda 12 although doable its a non-stop ordeal that takes over an hour of a constant shuffle of shaping dough, topping, and cooking.

With the 16 Koda however, you can feed four people with just two pies something that will only take 30 minutes from the second you spark the oven. This huge time-saving means you can enjoy some hot slices yourself when it’s time to eat.

Our Recommended Ooni Accessories:

There are tons of different accessories available to use alongside the Ooni pizza ovens. Carts to host the pizza ovens, covers to protect them, various sizes and styles of pizza peel options, Ooni infrared thermometer, products to aid in cleaning, and cookware to expand your cooking options beyond just delicious pizza. The options can seem overwhelming and the investment can add up quickly. Weve added quite a few accessories to our collection over the past couple of years and have put together an article walking you through our favorite Ooni accessories and which ones you can do without.

What We Dont Like About The Ooni Koda 16

While we have little to complain about, there are a few things we didnt particularly care for when purchasing/using this product.

First, it is much heavier than some other Ooni ovens and other backyard ovens on the market. While it is transportable, there are other options if you plan to take your pizza cooker camping or vacationing.

We were also slightly turned off after finding out that the heat gauge was not included. While you can set this bad boy to 950°F, there is no way to tell it gets that hot unless you purchase a temperature gauge or a thermometer.

The only flaw we have to note about the Ooni Koda 16 is that it does not have a door, like the Ooni Karu 16. A door would allow the pizza stone to retain its heat better.

But the Ooni Karu does have a chimney to allow the pizza oven to extract the excess heat and smoke from the charcoal or wood pellets. A chimney is something that we dont particularly are fond of, as it needs extra cleaning.

But, why the Ooni Koda 16 does not have a door?

Of course, there is a reason for that, ventilation.

There has to be a way to extract the extreme heat from the inside of the oven, and not having a door solves that problem.

However, since the opening or of the Ooni Koda 16 is so big it allows the pizza stone to cool faster particularly if you place the oven near wind rafts or if you live in cold weather.

We easily managed to control the temperature and Voila! You got yourself the perfect pizza!

How Does The Ooni Koda 16 Pizza Oven Rate

Before testing the Ooni Koda 16 gas pizza oven, I wasnt convinced wed get much use out of it. The idea of standing outside cooking pizza in the middle of winter didnt seem that appealing. But one test drive in and I was hooked. Its so easy to set up and use that we get it out at any opportunity. It now provides my daughters with their favorite dinner and is more popular among our friends and family than we are. Even our plasterers gave it the thumbs up.But you dont need to just take my word for it. There are more than 700 positive reviews for the Ooni Koda 16 on Oonis website and they give it an average rating of 4.8 out of 5, which is exactly where Id put it.

I especially love the Great Pizza Guarantee, which means that if you cant make tasty pizzas on the Ooni Koda within 60 days of having it, you can return it for a refund. So theres basically nothing to lose. You also get a three-year manufacturers warranty, for peace of mind.As one of the larger Ooni models, the Ooni Koda 16 gas oven is at the pricier end of pizza oven models so its definitely an investment buy, but one that is well worth it after testing it out. If you are happy to cook 12in pizzas instead, you might want to consider the smaller Ooni Koda 12 gas pizza oven instead. And if you like the idea of a more traditional wood-fired oven, then the Ooni Fyra or the multi-fuel Ooni Karu 12, both of which we’ve reviewed and rated on Gardeningetc, are certainly worth a look.

What Is The Ooni Koda 16 Gas Powered Pizza Oven

Ooni Koda 16" Gas

The Ooni Koda 16 Gas Powered Pizza Oven is a portable, midrange pizza oven intended for outdoor use. This pre-built oven is ready to use right out of the box. Its powered by propane gas and can reach temperatures up to 900°F / 500°C.

The Ooni Koda 16 is the big brother to the smaller Koda 12.

It has a 16-inch cooking floor, while the smaller version is 12 inches. So if you are in the market for a large, no-fuss oven, my review is for you!

In this review, Ill discuss my experience with the Ooni Koda 16, its main features and setting it up, and if I would recommend this product.

Are Popular Brands Really Worth The Extra Money

It can be hard to decide if paying the extra hundred dollars is worth it for the same product.

So, is it worth grabbing the brand that is a public favorite, or is the other options just as good?

Its hard to say whether or not the expensive options are better it depends on what you are comparing them to sometimes, you will simply be paying more for the name rather than extra quality.

The Koda 16 Needs To Live Outside

With foldable tripod legs and a total weight of 39.2 pounds, the Koda 16 is both manageable to transport and set up, and not something Id want to routinely move indoors between uses. In my testing, if you’re looking to cook pizza at least weekly, your Koda will need a place to permanently live outdoors.

Ooni sells a cover, which seems like a good investment if you plan on storing the oven anywhere where water can splash onto it. Id also advise moving just the stone indoors if you’re expecting rain pizza stones are made out of porous ceramic and its not something you want to get wet. As for the rest of the oven, it’s built to handle the elements. I’ve stored my Koda 12 outside without a cover for the past six months, and it’s a tad dirty but totally fine.

Granted, it doesnt taste *exactly* like a nonna italianas wood-fired oven, but its not that far off. So basically, you get all the conveniences of propane cooking AND a crispy pizza with great flavor.

And just like those big Italian tables that can fit the entire village, a 16 oven lets you host all your friends during your next monthly cook-out, whether at the park or at home! Because in Italy, Sunday pizza is sacred. Whether , diavola, napoletana or bufala, theres something for everyone.

What I Dont Like About The Gozney Roccbox Pizza Oven

Ooni Koda 16 Pizza Oven – In Depth Review – From Setup to Cook

I do have some gripes with this oven, though!

But these have less to do with what is included and more to do with what isnt included!

I would have liked for the Ooni Koda 16 to include a pizza peel, as its tough to use this oven properly without one. They arent hard to find, but it does mean that you cant start cooking pizzas right out of the box which is a bummer.

I wish the oven came with a built-in thermometer! There are cheaper ovens that already have this feature, and its convenient. Cooking without one can feel like shooting in the dark, and youll probably have trouble getting consistent pizzas without it.

The Ooni Koda 16 Oven Cooks Big Pizzas

Ooni Koda pizza ovens come in two sizes, the 12 and the 16. These numbers refer to the size of the pizza you can cook in it. Ooni Koda 12 oven cooks 12 pizzas. Ooni Koda 16 oven cooks 16 pizzas.

The 16 is one of Ooni s newer additions to the pizza oven family. Its perfect if youre like me and demand room for larger pizzas and the same style that you expect from the lustrous Ooni line of pizza ovens.

More notable is how easily the Koda 16 accommodates even your largest of pizzas.

Ooni Pizza Oven Review

We tried the Ooni Pizza Oven to find out if this favorite is worth the hype. Read on for our honest Ooni pizza oven review, tips, and recipe. This post includes affiliate links, which means I may earn a commission if you shop through them.

Growing up my family made homemade pizza almost every week. I now do this with my family, the way I was taught by my dad. This requires a pizza stone preheated in an oven cranked up as high as it can go.

Weve been lucky enough to also try some incredible authentic pizza in Italy and even cooked our own pizzas in a 16th century stone pizza oven in Tuscany.

One limitation in making that perfect crust as youd get from a pizza oven is that most ovens only reach 550°F, while the optimal temperature is around 850°F. The Ooni Pizza Oven solves this problem with a great little pizza oven that fits in most backyards and reaches 950 degrees in 20 minutes. Like the Blackstone Griddle, the Ooni has a cult following and often a long waiting list. I had to try it!

What Kind Of Dough Should I Use In The Ooni Koda 16

If youre making your own pizza dough, start with the classic pizza dough recipe right on Oonis website.

However, there are a couple of things youll need to know.

  • Ooni recipes favor the metric system, so you may feel a little lost for a moment if youre like me who lives in the American world of cups and teaspoons. It may be time to invest in a digital kitchen scale while you get acclimated.
  • Ever heard of 00 flour? I certainly hadnt. Ive learned that its basically the secret ingredient to a good Neapolitan pizza crust. And it turns out hunting down 00 flour during the dog days of COVID-19 proved to be extra challenging. Fortunately, it seems like the supply is now recovering making it a little easier to find.
  • Get yourself a dough proofing tray that can fit in the fridge. It will be your best friend when you go to separate your dough into individual balls and dont want them all to run into each other.
  • Edited to add: after a couple of years of experience behind us now, weve put together several videos in this post on How to Make Neapolitan pizza for your outdoor pizza oven. This is a great place to start if youre wanting to know how to make your own dough, how to stretch the dough, and how to transfer the pizza to your outdoor pizza oven.

    Ooni Koda 1: The Verdict

While there are more premium options in the market like Oonis Karu 16 and the Gozney Dome that bring more elements of a professional pizza oven into your backyard, the Koda 16 deserves praise for bringing quality pizza to the masses. The large size, reliability and low learning curve of the Koda make it the perfect entry-level oven for family pizza night. Over the past year, Ive been able to make more pizza at home than Ive collectively eaten in my childhood, all because of the simple design of the Koda.

    • Gas fuel offers no-fuss reliability
    • Large 16 oven size
    • The L-shaped burner offers a perfect crust with a single turn
    • Flippable bottom pizza stone
    • Uneven stone temperature takes some getting used to
    • More difficult to transport than smaller Koda 12
    • The outer shell is hot to the touch when in use
