The best pizza ovens for making pies in your backyard

tâs easy to see why people are shelling out dough on the best outdoor pizza ovens: They’re compact, relatively portable, easy to set up and use, and, because they can reach temperatures upwards of 900 degrees Fahrenheit, they can turn out delicious pies in minutes.

Plus, theyâre affordable. Most outdoor pizza ovens will set you back a couple hundred bucks, a small investment compared to the old days of building tricked-out backyard brick ovens. Lastly, little more than a table and a propane tank or some wood are needed to get many of them up and running.

Interested in tossing some money at an outdoor pizza oven? Letâs slice and dice through the best models that we’ve tested.

How To Build An Outdoor Diy Pizza Oven

Pequods Pizza suggests you make a 34 diameter oven for a small family, 42 for a large family, and a 50 oven for party size. All these measurements are based on igloo-type pizza ovens.

These guidelines will come in handy if youre planning to build a dome-shaped pizza oven. Youll also find out at what temperature you should cook your pizzas to make them crispy in this post. What a treat!

Ooni Outdoor Pizza Oven

Were kicking off the list with Ooni outdoor pizza ovens. This brand has taken the market by storm in recent years.

Their low profile and affordable price make Ooni a popular choice for homeowners.

So lets take a deeper look.

Ooni offers pizza ovens fueled by gas and wood pellets. They also offer a multi-fuel model which allows you to use charcoal, wood, or gasAll in one unit!

Some models feature a digital temperature control and hinged glass door.

Its important to note that the gas models do not have a doorSo you will lose a lot of heat there!

Speaking of heat retention Some Ooni pizza ovens have ceramic fiber insulation. The Ooni 3 is an example.

If you choose a model without insulation Know that you will lose heat a lot quicker.

As far as materials go, we cant complain! Ooni utilizes stainless steel construction throughout. The exterior utilizes powder coated steel for a colorful finish.

Overall, this is a solid portable outdoor pizza oven. You will want to purchase a pizza peel though as they are sold separately.

Ooni Frya 12 Outdoor Pizza Oven

The folks at Ooni keep getting closer to the perfect outdoor pizza oven. This iteration is truly portable, coming in under 25 pounds, and still functional, producing a great pie for your clan. Using real wood pellets, which you can find virtually anywhere, you get crispy pizzas with authentic wood fired flavors very quickly. It is an upgrade on the older Ooni 3 model weve reviewed in the past. For more details on the Fyra 12, see our full review here.

When we say very quickly, this unit can get over 900 degrees in fifteen minutes. It is truth in advertising, called a 12 because that is the largest pie that will fit easily into this unit.

WHAT WE DONT LIKE

It doesnt really have temperature control. To a point, the chimney baffle can slow things down, but otherwise it is flame on. Related to that, you want to watch your pellet feed. If you top off the feeder it can either cause a smolder with acrid smoke or blaze into scorching before cooking realms. A bit of attention, and a little practice, makes this easily avoidable.

Solo Stove Pi Pizza Oven

Sunjoy Wood

We were lucky enough to test out the Pi Pizza Oven firsthand, and it wowed us with its stylish design and even cooking. This pizza oven is made by Solo Stove, which is best known for its smokeless fire pits, and the appliance boasts the brands signature stainless steel exterior. You have your choice between a wood-fired oven or a dual-fuel oven that runs on either gas and propane, and in our experience, both options perform extremely well, reaching temperatures over 700ºF for fast cooking and crispy crusts.

What we loved the most about the Pi Pizza Oven is its extra-large panoramic opening, which made it much easier to launch and rotate our pies. The oven cooked pizzas in just a few minutes, and its convection-style design delivered impressively even results. Plus, after we were done, we were able to simply flip the baking stone over for a clean cooking surface.

Their excellent quality and unmatched innovation is also found in their Pi pizza oven.

Best Multipurpose: Cuisinart 3

  • Can be used as a grill and griddle

  • Produces even cooking every time

If you are looking to get the most out of your outdoor pizza oven, the Cuisinart 3-in-1 Pizza Oven Plus offers versatility, portability, and performanceand it’s one of the more affordable options on the list. In addition to making pizzas with the included 13-inch cordierite pizza stone, this Cuisinart oven functions as a grill with 260 square inches of cooking space or a griddle with 233 square inches of space. Even with all of that functionality, our Lab testers were most impressed with how easy this model is to use as a pizza oven and the consistency of the final pies.

In testing, it took 15 minutes to reach 600 degrees Fahrenheit at the front of the oven. It features a nice oven-style opening with a lid that folds down, and our testers found it easy to turn the pizzas, which you only have to do once halfway through cooking. This means there is minimal babysitting of your pizzas, but you’ll still end up with evenly cooked cheese and crisp crust.

When you want to move on to searing steaks, cooking hamburgers, or frying eggs, there’s a dual-hinged lid you can flip up and down and integrated storage space for keeping the grill grate and griddle plate.

Our one complaint with this appliance was the setup, but after it was assembled it’s incredibly easy to use. While it isn’t the lightest pizza oven on the list, you should be able to pack it up in the car for camping trips, tailgating, and more.

Where Should An Outdoor Pizza Oven Be Placed

Maximus Outdoor Wood

Best Budget: Presto Pizzazz Plus Rotating Oven

  • Top and bottom adjustable heating elements

  • Lightweight and portable

  • Doesn’t cook at extreme temperatures

If you prefer cooking your pizza indoors, but dont want to heat up your oven and your kitchen, the Presto Pizzazz Plus Rotating Pizza Oven does the joband its fun to watch. The major selling points of this model are its budget-friendly price and portability.

The pizza tray rotates continuously to bake the pizza evenly without burning. It heats from both the top and bottom, and the heating elements can be controlled separately, so if the crust is browned before the cheese is gooey, you can turn up the top heat and turn down the bottom heat.

In Lab tests, it took a while to heat up, and there was some inconsistency in the browning of the crust, but the cheese melted well, and the pepperoni on the frozen pizza cooked up nice and crispy. We like that a timer turns off the heat automatically, so you can walk away without worrying about a burned pizza, and an audible signal will alert you that your pizza is done. The pizza tray is removable and has a nonstick coating for easy cleaning.

You may have noticed a couple of versions of the Presto Pizzazz when browsing for secondhand models. While the packaging and finishes have changed a little bit from time to time, the pizza maker and its controls have stayed essentially the same with every model.

The Details: More About These Models

When I first saw the ovens, it hit me just how small a 12- or 13-inch pizza really is. They looked like tools Id use to reheat a single slice of pizza, not cook an entire pie from scratch. But in some ways, their small size is a virtue. All of these ovens are designed to be portable. Most weigh around 30 pounds and have short little legs, about 6 inches high. That makes them easier to take to a campsite or a friends house, but because the legs are so short, you need a suitable surface: A metal or stone table is ideal, but wood works, too.

In my own yard, I opted for two old wooden tables on a level patch of grass, where an occasional spark from the charcoal wouldnt do any damage. I would have traded some portability for taller legs or even a removable stand, like you often get with a portable grill. BakerStone and Ooni both make a variety of tables for these ovens, but the prices are a little ridiculous. BakerStone charges $150, while the large table from Ooni is $300pretty close to the cost of the oven itself.

Most outdoor pizza ovens heat up to temperatures from 700 to 800 F, while most indoor electric pizza ovens heat up to temperatures from 600 to 750 F.

Things To Consider Before You Buy A Pizza Oven

Before you make a decision on which wood-burning pizza oven you would like to get, there are a few things you should consider.

Do you want to get a portable or a standing pizza oven?

If you decide on a static oven like the handmade brick oven from Portugal, then you will need to get a few things prepared.

Firstly, where would you like the oven to be. It should be easily accessible so your family can enjoy it. If possible it should be in a sheltered area in your backyard but not too far away from the house. A solid, static oven will also add value to your property.

If you choose on a portable oven, then the question to ask is if you want it on a stand/cart or are you going to build one.

With a mobile oven, you are of course more flexible, and the location can be changed at any time.

Best Pizza Cookbooks For The Wood-Fired Oven

How important is the preheating time?

A brick oven takes a long time to heat up to your desired temperature than the portable ovens as you can see in my comparison chart.

On the other side, the brick oven retains the heat so much longer than the mobile ones. You could even cook your breakfast in the morning. Think of bacon, eggs, and sausages yum!

How about the size?

The size of the oven is a factor for a) how much space you have on your patio or backyard and b) what size pizza would you like to bake.

What is your budget?

In addition to the ovens, you will also need a few accessories like heat resistant gloves, a pizza peel and a brush for cleaning.
