I need my lettuce well washed or I feel like it tastes like dirt, but then it would always be soggy gross! This solves that. I love how easy it is to just push down the button I dont have to sit and pump it like other ones Ive used. The brake button is nice. I also love how well it stores lettuce in the fridge!” Sam

Best Under $1: Milo Classic Dutch Oven
While this Dutch oven isnt as well-known as the ones from Le Creuset or Staub, I honestly think it should be! It excelled at everything I made in it: rice, meatballs, chicken, bread. It cleaned up fairly easily and didnt chip or scratch. Its pretty, gold knob came a little loose during testing, but I just tightened it using a screwdriver. And while this pots handles were on the small side, that lid knob was large and grippy. Overall, this is an impressive Dutch oven that Id recommend to anyone who asks.
Best Budget: Cuisinart Chefs Classic 5

For less than $100, this Dutch oven was hard to beat. It has a roomy cooking surface, and everything I made in it turned out great. While its handles were a touch small, they were still large enough to comfortably grasp and its lids knob was as wide as the Le Creuset knobs. It was easy enough to clean, too, but it did chip when I whacked the rim with a metal spoon, so its not as durable as some of the other pots I tested. Its lid also came with a large sticker, which left a sticky film that was frustrating to remove.

Flaws But Not Dealbreakers
The bottom of the Lodge has a slightly curved surface compared with Le Creusets oven. Thats an asset when sautéing vegetables or caramelizing onions, but the Lodge required a few extra minutes to achieve the same level of sear on large cuts of meat, compared with other ovens with flatter surface areas. The base is an inch smaller than that on Le Creusets oven, so you have a little less room to brown meat if youre cooking in large batches.
Weve seen complaints from Amazon reviewers, our readers, and a few Wirecutter staff members that the Lodges enamel chips easily. We havent experienced any chipping ourselves, and Lodge told us that its warranty covers cracked or chipped enamel. But one Wirecutter writer with a damaged pot did not hear back from Lodges customer service. The Lodge is much more affordable than our upgrade pick, but it may also have a shorter lifespan. Price isnt always a tradeoff for quality, but in the case of Dutch ovens, it may be something to consider.
What Size Dutch Oven Should You Get
I focused on 5 1/2-quart Dutch ovens because theyre the best size for most home cooks and can accommodate pretty much every recipe you want to try. However, some of the Dutch ovens I tested were only available in 6- or 7-quart sizes. Obviously, if you regularly cook for a larger crowd , you might find a 7-quart Dutch oven more accommodating. I noted which Dutch ovens are available in larger sizes.

Who This Is For
An enameled Dutch oven is a multipurpose pot that you can use for all kinds of recipes, including braising, baking bread, boiling pasta water, and even deep frying. These pots are particularly well-suited to slow cooking not only because they effectively retain heat, but also because they can be transferred from stovetop to oven, so you can sear and then braise meats. Their lids trap in moisture as food cooks, which makes everything inside extra-tender. And unlike bare cast iron, the enamel is easy to clean and maintain.
A 5½- to 6½-quart oven should serve two to four people, and we think this size will work for most cooking tasks. If youre feeding a crowd, you might want to bump up to a 7-, 9-, or even 13-quart version. Keep in mind that the bigger the oven, the heavier and harder it will be to move around a kitchen, especially when its brimming with chili. When it comes to shape, a round Dutch oven will work better on the round burners of most stoves, whereas an oval oven may heat less evenly and be difficult to fit on a small stovetop. However, an oval oven can be useful for large, long roasts like a tenderloin. It will of course fit nicely on an oval burner, and it should also work fine on a large round burner for something like a braise, which you start on the stove and finish in the oven.
What Should Someone Look For In A Dutch Oven
The number one thing you should think about when buying a Dutch oven is the size you will need. Think about what you want to make in it and how many people you have to feed. If you are cooking for a family of four, I recommend a seven-quart, which will give you room for more portions, said Carlo.
Outside of size, youre also going to want to consider what the Dutch oven is made of and what type of lid it has. Carlo explained, While it might be tempting to go for lightweight stainless steel with a non-stick coating, it won’t hold up to the test of time. You want a heavy cast-iron pot with an enamel coating on the inside that won’t react to acidic foods. Cast iron holds heat and conducts it evenly, something you will need for a long braise or roast. It should also have handles wide enough to hold the pot with oven mitts on.
Carlo also mentioned that you should avoid anything with a glass lid. Lids for Dutch ovens should be heavy and fit tightly to trap steam. The knob on the lid should also be oven-safe and fit securely.
In terms of looks, Carlo said to find something that fits your personal style and color preferences. These pots can go straight from the oven or stovetop onto your table. Pick something you’ll be proud to show off and even pass on, as they will last forever if taken care of properly, she said.

Things To Consider When Buying A Dutch Oven
Shape:Most classic Dutch ovens come in round and oval shapes. If youll use it mostly for soups, stews and standard-sized roasts, a round Dutch oven will suit you. If you plan to roast whole chickens, braise turkey legs or cook other large cuts of meat, an oval shape may work better for you. If you only have room for one oven, we feel a round Dutch oven is most versatile.
Slope of the Sides:In addition to oval or round, we also noticed the slope of the sides of the oven mattered in testing. A few ovens were designed with sides that sloped in a bit, which left a smaller base area for browning meat. We preferred ovens with straight sides, and all of our favorite ovens reflect that.
Color:In testing, we noticed the interior color of the Dutch ovens mattered. Most Dutch ovens have a cream-colored enamel-coated interior, however, we did test others with black and grey interiors. Darker colors made it harder to caramelize onions accurately and determine browning.

The Best Dutch Ovens In 2022

All of the chefs we spoke to agreed shoppers should invest in a Dutch oven made out of cast iron which provides the best heat retention and temperature distribution with at least a 5-quart capacity and including a lid. Below, we included some expert recommendations for Dutch ovens worth considering and other highly rated options that aligned with their guidance on how to shop for them.
What Are Some Of Your Favorite Things To Cook In A Dutch Oven
I cook for two people and have two sizes: a 3.5-quart and a five-quart. The smaller one is perfect for preparations where I want to reign in my use of liquids. I use it for deep frying because I can use less oil. I use it for pasta because the less water you use, the faster it comes to a boil. I also use it for soups, rice dishes, sauces and bean stews, she explained. Carlo also said that she uses her Dutch ovens for soda bread, pot roasts, carnitas, searing large cuts of meat and roasting whole chicken.

Best Overall: Le Creuset 5 1/2
- Cleanup: 4.5
- Durability: 5
Who its best for:The cook whos looking for an investment piece of cookware thats both gorgeous and functional.Good to know:Its available in additional sizes and comes in 15-plus different colors, although not all colors are available for each size. Its also induction-friendly and has a lifetime warranty. While the pot I tested came with a stainless steel knob, these Dutch ovens can also come with the brands signature black knob or gold-colored stainless steel knob. However, you can purchase these knobs and swap one for another, depending on your personal preference. I do prefer the stainless steel, though, as it is better at standing up against the heat.
Staub also makes a top-notch Dutch oven. It has a roomy cooking surface and while its dark interior makes it tougher to gauge browning and watch fond develop, it wont discolor like a light interior might over time. Its handles and lid knob were smaller than Le Creusets, but still comfortable enough to grasp even with oven mitts on. It also came clean fairly easily and didnt chip or scratch. This one is also heavy and pricey. However, this is a splurge-worthy piece of cookware thatll be with you for a long time.
What We Look For In A Dutch Oven
I judged all of the Dutch ovens on the following criteria, on a scale of 1 to 5 :
- Cooking: How thoroughly and evenly did the Dutch oven brown meatballs and chicken thighs? Did it cook rice well? And what about bread?
- Ease of use: I looked at how easy it was to lift each Dutch oven and move it from the stovetop and into the oven and vice versa. I also evaluated how easy it was to monitor browning.
- Cleanup: Did the Dutch oven come clean easily?
- Durability: I looked at whether the Dutch oven chipped, cracked, dented, or became discolored throughout testing.
What Is The Dutch Oven Made Out Of
All of the experts we spoke to agreed that the best Dutch ovens are made out of cast iron. According to Garant, this material will promote even cooking and temperature distribution. Its also important to note that there is a difference between cast iron and enameled cast iron: While both of these give you the heat retention benefits of cast iron, the enameled versions make clean-up and maintenance much easier, Garant noted.

Atticus Garant, executive chef at the Fairmont Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles
Other types of Dutch ovens you might see on the market include stainless steel Dutch ovens and ceramic Dutch ovens. , executive chef at meal delivery service Trifecta, explained that though stainless steel Dutch ovens are relatively affordable, they usually dont come with a lid and wont retain heat as well as the other options. Ceramic Dutch ovens, meanwhile, are the lightest of all the options and because of this can crack easily if dropped or if temperatures change too abruptly, Limaudran said.

How Big Is The Dutch Oven
The experts we spoke to noted that if you have the space, its typically better to size up and get a Dutch oven with a larger capacity since you can always use a bigger pot to cook smaller portions, but not vice versa.
Dourleijn said that, at minimum, a 5-quart Dutch oven is good because you can use it to cook for as little as two people or as many as six people and its the right size for larger roasts. However, if you know youre only going to be cooking for two people and you want to save space, you can opt for a smaller, 4-quart dutch oven, which is also the ideal size for baking bread, according to Dourleijn.
